Editor's note:
On the morning of July 1, 2021, the conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China was grandly held in Beijing Tiananmen Square . At every important historical moment, the figure of Xinhua News Agency photographer is indispensable. They are witnesses and recorders, and they freeze the great moments in the camera forever. This issue of "I am at the scene and the story behind the photos" takes you into the story behind the photos of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party.

The celebration of July 1 is the second time I have "guarded" the audience in a major event after reporting on the 70th anniversary of the National Day. Surrounded by the sea of people, you will inevitably feel panic and unable to start, especially when you are kind-hearted, nervous and expectant eyes are casting at you from all directions.
Different groups of people have different expression characteristics, the chorus team members have full and high expressions, and they express their passion with all their strength; the soldiers' expressions are serious and firm, with power in solemnity; while the mass team from all walks of life and all directions have a slightly nervous expression - this is the most memorable moment in their lives, and under the pressure of great honor and grand occasions, even breathing seems cautious.
As the song sounded, everyone's expressions gradually relaxed in the familiar melody. In the middle, an old man's expression seemed particularly relaxed and pleasant. He waved the flag to the rhythm, his face filled with joy, as if he was sitting in his own yard swaying with the music, or recalling the glorious years of youth with his old friends.
did not record the touch or the explosion, but I felt that I had recorded happiness.

This photo was taken when a helicopter with the word "100" flew over in the Tiananmen Square. This scene has been brewing in my mind for a long time. At the training meeting before the event, the senior advised us to make a list of the equipment we want to bring and the pictures we want to shoot. This method is really useful. My position is on an iron rack. When assigned tasks, I was asked to walk to the center line on the south side of the national flag to take pictures of the national flag guard. According to the list, when the choir sang " New World ", I climbed down from the iron rack in advance and moved to the middle position when CCTV's live camera moved. To make the composition more compact, I fell to my knees on the red carpet to shoot. Because it rained the night before, the moment I knelt down, the cool rain wet my knees through my pants. However, when pressing the shutter, because of the high concentration of energy, I long forgotten the time and the existence of the external environment. I turned out to be a horizontal film, and the edited and carefully cut made the picture more compact.
Every major report is the result of teamwork, and behind it is the efforts of countless people. To use one word to describe the interview experience that day is solemn. The celebration was not long, but the atmosphere was solemn and warm. In Tiananmen Square, in the loud singing, we remember history and look forward to the future. Corresponding to solemnity, it reminds me of the heaviness of history and the heavy responsibility of the future. Over the past century, the martyrs have exchanged their blood for our lives today, and the price they have paid is heavy. And the future is in our hands and on our shoulders, and we have a long way to go. By the time of , I was 69 years old when the founding of New China was

This photo was taken from the fire ladder truck on the south side of the west red wall of Tiananmen City Tower . From a technical point of view, there is almost no difficulty in shooting: after taking the ladder truck, rise, select the right lens, expose the view in advance, wait patiently for the plane to enter the upper right corner of the screen, press the shutter and send the manuscript to the library.
At the same time, this is also a photo that is difficult to take.First, the difficulty lies in how to obtain such a high angle position in Tiananmen Square. This is inseparable from the accumulation of generations of Xinhua News Agency reporters in large-scale events held in Tiananmen Square in the past; it is inseparable from the ladder truck support team, which safely sends us to a height of 38 meters; it is inseparable from the technical team, which allows us to pass the photos back to the editorial department within 1 second; it is inseparable from the other four colleagues on the ladder truck, which work together to complete the task. This is the result of unity and cooperation.
The second is the difficulty, how to choose the right ladder truck location. Once the ladder truck is lifted and fixed, it cannot be moved. Although Xinhua News Agency has similar ladder truck locations in previous activities, the process this time is different, and the elements of the on-site screen have also changed a lot. So I took advantage of the previous two drills to repeatedly find the right angle of the ladder truck. After many trial shots, I recorded the most suitable height and azimuth angle. During the official event, we followed the map and quickly arrived at the established location, successfully completed the shooting task, and captured almost the same picture as expected.
The third is the difficulty. After staying in the sky for nearly 5 hours, how to overcome inner tension and anxiety (omit 1,000 words).
Personally, at the important historical moment of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party, I felt excited and shocked in my heart, and my faith was baptized again. I deeply feel that the century-old party is in its prime, and only by working tirelessly can we be worthy of this great era.

When the flying performance echelon whizzed past Tiananmen Square, the first climax of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party was set off. The eagle strikes the sky and looks proudly at the sky. The words "100" symbolizing the Chinese Communist Party's century-long journey flew over the National Museum. Young students watching the ceremony on the spot held bright red party flags and waved their arms to cheer in the direction of the sky. They are in the same frame as the word "100", as if they are talking to a century-old history, and as if they are listening to the call of the next prosperous era for a hundred years. I have fantasized about pictures like
countless times before the official event, and I have a few uncertainties and worries in my heart: Can I find a group of people who show their youthful vitality near the shooting points? Will the flight echelon fly over the right position above the point? The flight speed is too fast, and if I am located in the east of the square, the numbers will be reversed if I shoot the reverse.
Fortunately, everything is just right at the right time. When a colleague came from the walkie-talkie , he reminded me that "the flight echelon will arrive at Tiananmen Square immediately", I quickly came to the front row of the college student wearing a white top who had already been looking for locks, squatted down, raised the wide-angle lens frame to form the picture, waited for the words "100" to fly in, press the shutter, and freeze the long-awaited moment. In the picture of
, young students are full of youth and vigor, and they are excited for the party’s century-old struggle history. In the next century, they will definitely strive for a more magnificent era with their youth brushes!

Every time major interviews are conducted, there are often occasional joy and regrets of not seeking it. Photography is often an art with shortcomings in the beauty. Filming a grand event like the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party is actually a competition of experience and creativity. When shooting is on the scene, the skills are often beyond shooting.
Even if the experienced big names suddenly receive the interview notification, they may be confused. The topic of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party is too big. How to record such a magnificent scene is a question that every photographer must think about and answer.
My shooting location is in the northeast corner of the roof of the Great Hall. After two drills, many people felt that this was a "waste angle" because they happened to face CCTV's tall flying cat pole, which was too much interference. People with a person have different opinions. I always feel that for a grand event like the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, a photo that can show the whole picture must be taken to vividly display this great historical moment. The positional relationship between the Tiananmen Gate Tower and the square cannot be ignored, and this is the shooting factor that must be considered first. The flying cat pole affects the picture, of course it is best if there is no, but this is the scene. Compared with the grand event like the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party, I feel that this is a factor that needs attention and can be ignored. To be important means to think about how to shoot to minimize interference; to say ignorance means to pursue the value of the picture, this interference is so insignificant.
Human resources have metabolism, and the relationship has become ancient and modern. We come from history and eventually we must go to history. The photographer's steps are endless, and the road to thinking is endless.

For this report, I was mainly responsible for the editorial work, but the shooting habits developed by photographers over the years have always been like the paws of a kitten that kept scratching in my heart. How to not affect the editorial work and satisfy my original intention when becoming a photographer is a problem I face.
On the evening of June 30, I came to Xinhua News Agency's News Building in a thunderstorm to check the shooting locations of different floors. When I walked to the 21st floor, I thought I had solved the problem: there was a window here facing Tiananmen Square, with almost no cover in front. Even in the rain, I could see the Tiananmen Gate Tower, the Great Hall, the National Expo HTML and other icons of modern Beijing that were lit by lights. Of course, there are more distant Chinese Zun and CCTV Building .
I stood by the window, imagining the aerial echelon forming "100" and "71" formations and pulling colorful smoke to fly across Tiananmen Square frozen in my shot, and lightning flashed outside the window, but a rainbow appeared in my heart: it did not affect the editorial work I was responsible for, but could take care of my original intention. There is no doubt that this is the best choice.
Around 6 a.m. on July 1, I came to the News Building, brought a rag to the place I saw last night, wiped the windows clean, and then rushed back to the office and prepared for the editor with my colleagues. At around 7:50, I went upstairs again to the 21st floor. After a few minutes, everything came as promised.
In less than five minutes, I had finished shooting and rushed back to the editorial position. My colleagues almost didn't notice my departure. Only my heart was beating violently...

36.8 meters - It is the height of this solemn moment with photos... On July 1, my colleagues from different departments and I were crowded in a hanging basket with limited area of fire ladder trucks with professional equipment, and recorded the magnificent scene of "celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China" with excitement.
The huge fire ladder truck stands on the side of Chang'an Street road outside the south gate of Zhongshan Park. This is the first time I was standing in the ladder truck to shoot in a major event report. For us at the northwest high point of the venue, we are more about how to show a good venue environment and other grand scenes.
When the national flag guard kicked the red carpet marching along the red carpet from the Monument of the People's Heroes in the center of the square to the flag pole north to the flag pole, the national flag guard was like a ship marching in the sea of people, heading along the track of the red carpet. The national flag guards were uniform and in line with the same steps. The red carpet under their feet was particularly conspicuous under the dense bodies of countless viewers on the scene. I pointed the telephoto lens in my hand at the opportunity of the officers and soldiers kicking. When I saw them walking to a position where the carpet was exposed, I took a decisive shot. The visual center in the photo falls on the national flag bearer in the center of the picture. The neatly dressed queue and the dense and orderly audience formed a visual reflection of movement and stillness, and the firm sound of stepping on the red carpet can still swirl in your ears.

The fire of salutes is an important part of the celebration. The national flag guards walked towards the flag-raising area with 100 salutes, with a sonorous and powerful pace. The atmosphere was solemn and solemn.
The salute position is between Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and Zhengyang Gate. When it is set off, the salute sound is deafening, and the gun barrel spews out the flames. The skin can feel the burning sensation caused by shock wave . When every cannon sounded, the reporters standing beside each other followed each other with a "trembling" together. During the drill, a reporter asked the young soldiers why they could not move at all when they were ringing. The little soldier grinned and said, "You'll practice it." It can be seen that the more light the downplay, the harder the training behind it will be. These days I have been lucky enough to meet these young men. The serious and cute person is so handsome.
I once photographed the People's Liberation Army's first flag raising mission in Tiananmen Square on New Year's Day 2018. At that time, I chose to stand at the northeast corner of the national flag base and shoot with the east gate of the Great Hall of the People with the national emblem as the background. This is also the regular angle for shooting the Tiananmen Square flag raising ceremony. And this time, when I first received the task, I considered taking pictures different from the past, which could directly show the major historical moment of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party.
Through the drill, I decided to choose to shoot on the north side of the national flag base, and reflect the news theme of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party with the Monument to the People's Heroes, the red arch, the giant party emblem shape and the words "1921" and "2021" as the background. After the shooting policy of
is determined, the rest is to grasp the specific details. First, you can't stand on the flat ground to shoot. The shooting angle of the flat ground is too low. The hat of the Navy's flag bearer will overlap with the "2021" sign. After comparison during the drill, I chose to step on the three ladders to shoot; second, I used the flagpole to block a giant lamp pole in the background to make the background of the picture clean. This requires that the distance and relative angle of the ladder placement point and the flagpole are very accurate. Through the attempts during the drill, I determined to place the ladder between the 6th and 7th pieces of a row of north-south longitudinal floor tiles on the north side of the national flag base. The ground was laid with a red carpet during the formal event. Fortunately, the position of the floor tiles can still be identified. Since I was also responsible for taking the entry of the flag guards on the south side of the flag base, I placed the ladders accurately in place early before the celebration began to avoid deviations in the position during the rush to move. Third, the flag-raising photo mainly takes the moment when the flag-raising bearer sways the flag. He must seize the moment when the national flag is flying to the highest point and the flag-bearer moves the most relaxed. At the same time, he must ensure that the national flag will not block the party emblem and the word "1921" and "2021" marks, so I chose to use a camera to take a high-speed continuous shooting of 20 pictures per second to ensure the best moment. It is a bit regrettable that compared with the pictures taken during the drill, there are not enough five stars exposed in this picture of national flag , which of course is indeed a bit hard to come by.
On the morning of July 1, the conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China was grandly held in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. Xinhua News Agency reporter Ren Chao
My location is on the top of the east gate of the Great Hall of the People. I am very honored to have the opportunity to shoot and report on this location. Recording the pictures of Tiananmen Square and the audience on site is in my opinion one of the important components of the shooting at this point.
During the first drill, I found that the pre-set points were not ideal, and during the shooting process, they would be disturbed by flagpoles on both sides of the elevated road. After the drill, I used the gap between daily shooting interviews to redesign the points with my colleagues, which played an important role in the success of the photo shoot.
The weather changes significantly on July 1st. From about 4 o'clock to 8 o'clock, the sky is mainly sunny, and backlight will occur at my point. Moreover, my position is a certain distance from the eaves of the Great Hall of the People . If you take it horizontally, the eaves of the Great Hall of the People will enter the picture to affect the composition of the photo. So I stood a little tiptoe during the shooting process and appropriately pressed the lens downwards, so I can effectively avoid the interfering elements in the picture. After successfully recording this photo, I was very excited. I was able to record the scene of the celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China in my own lens language, showing the increasingly powerful motherland. I think it is really glorious and proud.

For this conference, my location was on the north side of Tiananmen Square, mainly responsible for shooting the military band and the lyrics group. It seems that the scope of activities is very large, but in order to ensure the solemnity of the conference and the live broadcast effect of the TV, there are actually many restrictions during shooting.
Therefore, after the first drill ended, I not only conceived the shooting angle and picture, but also carefully considered my own position and strived to be "careful step by step". Later, I saw that I, who appeared in the camera of my colleagues, almost always walked through the two square arrays with my waist.
During the drill, I noticed that when the members of the dedication team recited "Please rest assured, the strong country has me." The teenagers have sonorous voices, powerful movements, and firm eyes, which is the climax of the speech session. I must record this picture. After weighing it over and over, I decided to shoot from the front, with their raised right fists as the foreground and the huge arch decoration on the square as the backdrop to highlight the momentum. However, because there are camera rockers, microphones, flagpoles, poles, etc. on site, it is necessary to find an angle to stagger these elements - neither blocking the arches nor the arches on the Monument to the People's Heroes and the plaques of Chairman Mao's Memorial Hall. On the day of the
I repeatedly compared the meeting on the spot to determine the most suitable location. Because the shooting time for this punch is only about 5 seconds, and after that, I need to move to Military Band within 10 seconds, and the shooting window for the next screen is only 6 seconds.
Hard work pays off, this screen hits with one blow.
July 1st is actually my birthday. On this day, there is no cooler birthday for me to record this century-old ceremony in Tiananmen Square.
I remembered the words of the teenagers in the Devotional Group to cheer themselves up every time they train: "I have been in the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party. Please rest assured that the Party has, I have to be strong in the country!"
On the morning of July 1, the conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China was grandly held in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. This is a collective speech delivered by representatives of Communist Youth League members and Young Pioneers. Xinhua News Agency reporter Chen Jianli photographed any large-scale event. After sending the expected shot back to the editorial department at the last moment, as Xinhua News Agency photographers, we have been tense and relieved.
I was finally determined to shoot in front of the teenager's "Speech Group" until the second drill. This shooting location is very "eyefully". I received special "care" and was notified to try not to shoot too far in the official event, and try to use telephoto lenses as much as possible.
After arriving at the scene late at night, I followed the relevant instructions and prepared to retreat my shooting position. When I was selecting a spot, a CCTV camera reporter communicated with me about the shooting position. Since our documents cannot cross the middle of Chang'an Street, we had a conversation with the "Chu-Han Border River" in the early morning between the guard line and the shooting location of the Xinhua News Agency's "Speech Group".
After many communications, we reached an agreement and I retreated and filmed in parallel with CCTV host. Although it is not as good as the location I chose before, at least I can "coexist peacefully" without affecting the overall situation, and can complete the shooting task successfully.

At 7:30 am on July 1, 2021, with the clear song of "Singing a Mountain Song to the Party" sounding in Tiananmen Square, the conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China slowly kicked off.
My location is located on the fire truck ladder on the north side of Chang'an Street, near the Labor People's Cultural Palace . It is far away from the "core area". The telephoto lens is "unable to reach", and the height is the only advantage. On the premise of ensuring safety, we made several attempts and finally set the operation height to 40 meters.
After the initial nervous shooting, I decided to soothe a little bit, put down the camera, and carefully examine the grand event in front of me.
This is the first time I have watched the entire Tiananmen Square up close from such a special angle. Although there were two drills before, it was late at night, and the venue layout had not been completed yet, so I could not grasp the full picture.
Looking west, from Tiananmen Gate Tower to the south, a red carpet is placed to the Monument to the People's Heroes. On the north side of the monument, the party emblem and the words "1921" and "2021" are particularly eye-catching. From my perspective, the entire Tiananmen Square resembles the shape of a ship.
1921, The First National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held in Shanghai, and then moved to a cruise ship in Nanhu, Jiaxing, Zhejiang. The site of the First Congress of the Party and the Red Boat in Nanhu, Jiaxing are the places where our Party’s dreams set sail. The little Red Boat 100 years ago has now become a giant ship, leading hundreds of millions of people to ride the wind and waves...
Thinking of this, I raised my camera again, "KaKaKa"... Many photos were sent directly to the editorial department of the General Office. After quick and clever tailoring, the "giant ship sets sail" was born.

The red flag is waving, and the country is like a painting; the century-old birthday is celebrated by the whole country. How to use photography language to show the solemnity and ritual of the celebration conference and to create a warm and inspiring atmosphere is my goal. My shooting location is on the east platform of Tiananmen Gate Tower. Next to me, there are four eye-catching red flags, which are also visual symbols I have always wanted to use. In the century-old history of the Communist Party of China, the red flag has always been a unique image, symbolizing revolution, hope, and glory and dreams. After repeated comparisons, I climbed to the height of the viewing platform of the East Platform and took a wide-angle lens to capture this picture: the red flag on the city tower fluttered in the wind, echoing the national flag on the square, and important elements such as Huabiao, audience phalanx, military band, choir, vocal group, people's hero monument, party emblem and "1921" and "2021" character marks were spread out one by one in the picture.
A century-old journey has created great achievements, and the wind blows the red flag and sets off again. The rear editor is unique and cuts the original piece into a vertical picture, abandoning the redundant part, making the picture look more compact. This is also an excellent example of benign interaction between front journalists and rear editors. Only by trusting each other and cooperating tacitly can we achieve new things.

This time I carried out the reporting task, my shooting location was Donghua Table in front of Tiananmen Gate, which was in front of the choir and the mass formation. Looking south from this angle, there were millions of surging faces in the camera, and a back view attracted my attention. She is the conductor of the choir and has always been on the podium at the celebration. She has almost no chance to turn around and take a look at the grand event behind her, leaving only a back for the camera. When the celebration came to an end, the audience sang " Singing the Motherland ", the members of the choir waved the flag in their hands, and I pushed the camera to the telephoto end. The entire picture was woven into a scroll by countless red flags, and the female conductor was waving her hands, as if weaving this red canvas. I pressed the shutter and shot at the high speed to freeze her graceful back.

Report on the conference celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China is a major test in my heart for photography.
In this big test, I was responsible for the photo shooting tasks of the pigeon release area and the balloon release area.In order to get a good score, I used the two pre-exercises as simulation tests, stepped on the floor tiles from the monument to the east and south sides of the square one by one, walked back and forth in this small area, and conceived more than a dozen feasible shooting points and predicted the possible pictures. Then, according to the process arrangement of the celebration, I outlined the order of movement during the formal event in the notebook, hoping that while highlighting the buildings, I could shoot the effect of flying pigeons, vigorous and uncluttered.
But after walking out of the "examination room", I also gained other insights: the photographer's mission is to record, tell, and to shape the national historical memory. At this moment, the camera in my hand seems not only to capture the present and complete the publishing task, but also to communicate with the world and the future. As Chinese photographers, we tell the world our own stories and retain our own national memories for the future.
is so lucky to me.

When taking this photo, the conference was over. The pigeons had already flew away and the balloons were gone, but these girls and young men were still shouting and jumping passionately.
During several previews and formal celebrations, these young people maintained a full mental state, and their smiles and body movements were neatly arranged. After the conference, although they still maintained their formation, they obviously relaxed. A girl made the "heart-to-heart" posture that young people used to take photos towards Tiananmen Square. Then many girls began to stretch out their arms and smiled and drew a heart shape. I think their metaphor is "Red Heart to the Party" at this moment.
I used a 70-200mm lens to shoot, let the party emblem, "1921", "2021" word marks and the People's Heroes Monument enter the picture, and I took this photo. As soon as the photos were sent back to the editorial department, the girls and the young men scattered their formations. They and we all completed the task successfully.
