As someone who has worked in academia and studied the field of medicine for many years, I promise you that although many people who are not in this field may think so, in fact, this field is not full of geniuses.

People seems to think if you are rich with a good job you must be smart. Generally speaking I've only met one rich person I would consider smart. The rest? Oooooooof. I seriously wonder how some of them passed gradeschool.

People seem to think if you are rich with a good job you must be smart. In general, I think it's smart enough to know only one rich person in my life. What's left? Forget it. I seriously doubt how some of them graduated from elementary school.

Now there are a few gifted people to be sure but 99% it’s perfectly average people who just showed up and did the work. It’s more commitment than intelligence. As long as you don’t have an actual severe learning disability and have access to the correct resources (this is a big one) and put in the effort, you can do it too.

Of course, there will definitely be a few talented people, but 99% of the people are ordinary people. They just go to work on time and do their job well. It requires more investment than wisdom. As long as you don't have severe learning dysfunction and can search for the right resources (this is very important) and then invest enough, you can do it too.
Also, don’t ever assume that just because someone is incredibly knowngeable at one thing that it will carry over broadly to other things. Some of the most successful people have incredibly narrow, focused specialized knowledge. If an orthopaedic surgeon tries to talk to you about infectious disease, take it with a grain of salt. If an astronaut tries to talk to you about the economy, take it with a grain of salt.

In addition, don't think that because someone is very knowledgeable in a certain field, this person will also be knowledgeable in a wide range of other aspects. Some of the most successful people have surprisingly narrow knowledge and are surprisingly dedicated. If a plastic surgeon wants to talk to you about infectious diseases, then you'd better not believe it all. If an astronaut wants to talk to you about economics, then you'd better not believe it all.

Can confirm. Have a bachelors in chemical engineering. Not because I'm smart, I'm just fucking stubborn and refused to quit after failing exams over and over.

I can confirm. I have a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering . It’s not because I’m very smart, but because I’m very stubborn, even if I fail the subject over and over again, I refuse to quit.

Silence. I’ve been told so many times that I’m thoughtful and a deep thinker but really I can’t figure out what to say lol

silence. There are many people who tell me that I am thoughtful and a deep thinker, but in fact I just don't know what to say hahaha

My girlfriend thinks my silence is me thinking hard or letting her sort her emotions out but it’s really me trying to think of anything to say but I’m a dumbass

My girlfriend thinks my silence is because I’m thinking seriously, or want her to adjust her emotions by herself, but in fact I’m just thinking seriously that I should say something, but I can’t say anything because I’m a stupid person.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than say something and remove all doubt.

would rather stay silent so that others may think you may be a fool than really open your mouth to speak, so that others will realize that you are undoubtedly a fool.
Even better if they think you're smart lol.

Of course, make them feel that you are smarter and better.

There's a very good saying about that, I may be paraphrasing but I've always heard it as: a wise man speaks because he has something to say, a fool speaks because he has to say something.

There is a very good saying about it, and I've always heard it as: a wise man speaks because he has something to say, a fool speaks because he has to say something.

Similarly: It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to talk and remove all doubt of it.

similar: it is undoubtedly better to stay quiet and take the risk of being thought of as idiot by others than to speak out, making others feel that you are stupid.

Off topic here, but walking above average speed at work makes people think you're a hard worker ..

Bit a question, walking at an average speed at work will make others think you are serious about your work...

I was surprised when I learned that knowledge isn't necessarily correlated to intelligence. I met a lifelong academic who knows damn near everything about her topic .... but just the facts. It's like, she was a walking vitality, could coough up any info about her field, but she couldn't really process it that well, or draw conclusions, or apply it to a different topic. It's hard to explain. She had a nice 2TB SSD drive full of info in her head but she had a substandard CPU. Since then I've met several people like that. All academics, but I'm not sure that has anything to do with it.

I was surprised when I knew that knowledge was not exactly equal to wisdom. I know someone who has worked in an academic career for the rest of her life and she knows almost everything she knows about her field of research…but it is just facts. It's like she's a walking encyclopedia that can cough up any knowledge in her field with a cough, but she can't really deal with it, or draw conclusions, or apply it to different fields. It's hard for me to say. It's like she has a great 2TB SSD in her brain, but has a second-rate CPU. I have known several similar people since then. They are all from the academic world, but I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the academic world.

It really is interesting the way different people work. Coming from a TTRPG background, it’s like the way intelligence and wisdom are separate - specific knowledge and common sense are entirely, entirely divided.

The way different people work is really interesting. Explaining from the perspective of role-playing games, it is like wisdom and intelligence are two separate attributes—the expertise and common sense in a certain field are completely separate.
I will say, as someone who works closely with academic experts - this is common in academics. Many of the smartest people I’ve ever met are also kind of dumb. I think that’s ok, though.

As a person who works closely with academic experts - this is common in academics. Many of the smartest people I know are also quite stupid. Of course I don't think this is a problem.
There is absolutely a place for it, especially in r&d and academic in general. If you come across a new thing, the walking infodump is your best source of insight on it. Maybe someone else interprets all that together and draws the conclusions, but Dr. Incredibly Specific Human Google is good to have around.
