Recently, the conflict situation in Russia and Ukraine has taken another step.
Ukrainian 's uncompromising attitude completely smoothed out the patience of the Putin authorities' willingness to negotiate. The nature of the war has gradually become a resolution of political and racial differences, and has evolved into a separatist war in Ukraine. Specifically, recently, the four regions of Donetsk, Ukraine, Lugansk, Zaporoze, , and Khlsson, have officially decided to hold a referendum to join Russia, completely putting the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the contradiction between Russia and Western countries on the surface.
There is no doubt that both the Russian and the West understand that this referendum has great risks. Western countries led by the United States have criticized Russia for violating international rules, but have ignored their evil deeds that have violated international rules many times. Russia has also made complete preparations for this referendum. Putin formally ordered Russia to carry out local mobilization and recruit 300,000 soldiers from the reserve. In addition, Russia also hinted that it might attack the US Starlink satellite.
From the current trend and the proportion of Russians in the four regions of Ukraine, the four regions participating in the referendum will most likely pass the referendum to Russia. Once these regions become Russia's territory, how should Russia guarantee this victory? The answer has also been given. Recently, Russian Security Conference Vice Chairman Medvedev stated that after the Ukrainian region holds a referendum on joining Russia, Russia will greatly strengthen military protection in these areas and may use strategic nuclear weapons.
As soon as this news came out, it undoubtedly added fire to the already ignited conflict situation in Russia-Ukraine. After all, this is the first time since the Cold War that Russia has admitted that it may use nuclear weapon , which fully proves that Russia has been forced to a certain extent, so it has to use nuclear weapons to deter it. The reason is not difficult to analyze.
First, conventional military forces are too expensive, and they are forced to use nuclear weapons. Since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukraine conflict, the Russian army's special military operations in Ukraine have always been using conventional military forces to attack the Ukrainian army. This large-scale conflict has continuously consumed Russia's financial and material resources, but Ukraine can receive continuous military assistance from Western countries. As one goes up and down, continuing to fight conventional wars is obviously unfavorable to Russia. From a certain perspective, the use of nuclear weapons is indeed more beneficial to Russia. However, it is certain that as long as it is not reached the critical moment of life and death, Russia is likely to not use it. After all, once nuclear weapons are used, the nature will change.
Second, Western countries are too arrogant, and only nuclear weapons can shock them. Judging from the current situation of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Western countries are completely "a dead pig is not afraid of boiling water". Western countries are not only not afraid of Russia's special military actions in Ukraine, but are also eager to try it out. It is obvious that this is the Western countries who think they have grasped Russia's life gate and are sure that Russia will not take excessive actions. In this case, if Russia wants to make Western countries afraid, it may only be possible to take advantage of nuclear weapons. Although it is likely not to use it, the deterrent effect is still very obvious. Just like the Cuban missile crisis in the past , although both the United States and the Soviet Union are very tough, both sides are very cautious about this deterrence on the issue of nuclear weapons.
Third, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine exceeded expectations, and nuclear deterrence is expected to end the war. At present, the situation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is not only beyond Ukraine's expectations, but also beyond Russia's expectations. From a certain perspective, this referendum is not ruled out as a proper move by Russia to suspend the conflict and retain the fruits of existing victory. Therefore, if all parties recognize the result of this referendum, then war is completely avoidable, and if not, then Russia's emphasis on using nuclear weapons to defend its sovereignty over the region entering Russia will undoubtedly greatly increase this deterrent. From a certain perspective, as long as Ukraine and Western countries do not want to turn nuclear deterrence into nuclear war , they have to default to the referendum results, and the conflict is completely likely to be downgraded.
This time Russia showed a red card, emphasizing the deterrence of possible use of nuclear weapons. In fact, to a large extent, it blocked the choice of Western countries through deterrence. Whether Western countries recognize the referendum results or not, they will have to accept it under the high pressure of Russia. This is the cleverness of the Putin authorities' use of the nuclear weapons trump card to deter. However, Western countries can understand Russia's intimidation intention, but the Ukrainian Zelensky government may not understand it. Just recently, Zelensky made a high-profile statement that he did not believe that Russia would use nuclear weapons. Such overconfident remarks will undoubtedly greatly increase the risk of nuclear war. Once the nuclear war breaks out, not only will Russia face great humanitarian condemnation, but the entire Ukraine may suffer from the disaster, which is also a huge humanitarian disaster for the whole world.
