Yangcheng Evening News Exclusive Interview

Yangcheng Evening News: What obligations and procedures do the auction company have during the collection process? Is there an obligation to verify the source?

Xu Xiwen: When collecting lots, we will ask the client to explain the source to ensure the legality of the auction; the client will also require the client to guarantee the legality of the source of the lot. At the same time, we also conduct internal lots for verification, and cultural relics items will be verified through the "China stolen (lost) cultural relics information release platform". However, we cannot find that Lin Sijin's collection of letters has been registered on the platform, which means that it has not been registered.

After the auction company makes a preliminary judgment on the authenticity and origin of the goods and evaluates whether they can be auctioned, it must submit the approval to the national cultural relics authority. According to the "Management Measures for Cultural Relics Auctions", auction companies must submit to the cultural relics department for review 35 working days before the auction date, and the cultural relics department can only take the auction after issuing the approval document.

Then the national cultural relics authorities review the target to be auctioned, one of which is to confirm whether the target to be auctioned is a cultural relic that is not allowed to be auctioned, whether it is a stolen (lost) cultural relic in the collection, etc. Domestic collections of stolen (lost) cultural relics are usually queried through the "China stolen (lost) cultural relics information release platform". Those who have registered must not take photos.

This time, the spring auction in Chongzheng, Guangdong was held on September 13, 2020, and the "Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau's approval on the cultural relics targets of the "Guangdong Chongzheng 2020 Spring Auction" was stamped on August 26, 2020. Guangdong Chongzheng Spring Auction is strictly carried out in accordance with the auction procedures.

Yangcheng Evening News: What measures has the auction company taken since the doubts appeared online?

Xu Xiwen: On the eve of the preview auction, Guangdong Chongzheng had noticed that outsiders had questioned the source of Lin Sijin's collection of books. In response to different voices, Guangdong Chongzheng, in a responsible attitude, decided to withdraw the items of "Gu Yi Qingfen" special catalog number No. 731-776 immediately after research.

Therefore, the lot of "Gu Yi Qingfen" special catalog number 731-776 did not appear at the preview site, nor was it auctioned.

Yangcheng Evening News: What is the situation about "Lin Sijin's letter"?

Xu Xiwen: After online verification, this batch of lots was publicly sold in 2005. It was learned from the client of Chongzheng's Lin Sijin's Tibet Letter that the client obtained this batch of Lin Sijin's precious letters through auction in 2005. It has been collected so far, and has entrusted Chongzheng to auction with multiple targets.

Yangcheng Evening News: From the perspective of auction companies, can similar situations be reduced or avoided?

Xu Xiwen: On the "China's stolen (lost) cultural relics information release platform", no information about Lin Sijin's collection of letters was found. The client also obtained the letters in good faith, and there was no Sichuan Province in the entire letters on it. Any imprint of the library. What to do if this situation is done?

But I think this incident can also convey a very beneficial meaning, that is, as the Internet becomes more and more developed, information transparency becomes more and more high, and netizens are also very involved. I believe in paying attention to and protecting cultural relics. The environment will gradually improve. At the same time, we also call on the whole society to pay attention to and protect cultural relics, which is a cultural blessing.
