Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives After Pelosi visited Taiwan in early August, the cross-strait situation heated up, and the People's Liberation Army continued to conduct military exercises around the island. There were once again calls for extending military service on the island, advocating extending it from the current four months to one year. Does the DPP really dare to do this?
The current regulations of the Taiwan military require that the " standing service " conscripts are male servicemen with a BMI value of 17-31. The new version of the regulations relaxes the BMI value to 16.5-32. Take a man with a height of 170 centimeters as an example. If his BMI value is 16.5, his weight is approximately 47.7 kilograms; if his BMI value is 32, his weight is approximately 92.3 kilograms.
" replaces ". The Taiwan military originally required male draftees with a BMI between 16.5-17 or 31-31.5. The new version adjusted the standard to a BMI between 15-16.5 or 32-35. In terms of height standards, the current regulations stipulate that men below 157 centimeters are exempt from military service, and the new amendment adds that men between 155 and 157 centimeters must serve as substitutes.
According to the new regulations of the Taiwan military, only those with a height less than 155 centimeters and a BMI value of more than 35 or less than 15 can be exempted from military service. What is this concept? Let's take a man with a height of 170 centimeters as an example. If his BMI value is 35, his weight is about 101.2 kilograms; if his BMI value is 15, his weight is about 43.4 kilograms. In other words, if they are not extremely fat, ordinary fat people have to serve in the military.
In recent years, it has been difficult to recruit soldiers to the Taiwan military. Last year, there were 154,000 births and 184,000 deaths, with a natural increase of minus 30,000. At the same time, some people use all kinds of tricks to avoid military service. In May of this year, a case occurred on the island: In order to be exempted from military service, a man asked an AIDS patient to do a physical examination for him. As a result, the military service was really exempted. However, he was planning to marry his girlfriend, but he repeatedly received calls from the health department. Call and ask him to go to the hospital for re-examination. In order to prevent his girlfriend from mistakenly thinking that he really had AIDS and therefore unable to get married, he voluntarily surrendered to the prosecutor. As a result, the prosecutor followed the clues and found out that the AIDS patient also had improper financial transactions with five other men. All five men admitted that they had indeed used this method to evade military service.
It’s no wonder that the Taiwanese people and politicians in the Democratic Progressive Party authorities are deserting military service in various ways. For example, Lin Feifan, deputy secretary-general of the Democratic Progressive Party, who was just listed by the mainland on the list of "Taiwan independence" die-hards, was unwilling to serve in the military and only served as a substitute for about ten days. After the conflict between Russia and Ukraine broke out, he shouted "We are all Ukrainians at this moment". As a result, he was ridiculed by the crowd, and most netizens asked him to serve in the military first.
The Taiwan military’s current plan to raise the threshold for exemption from military service is just a stopgap measure. The point is that the DPP authorities dare not offend young people. During the Chen Shui-bian period, military service was reduced by two months at regular intervals. As a result, by the time of Ma Ying-jeou, the service period for young people had been reduced from two years to one year. During his term of office, Ma Ying-jeou vigorously promoted the military recruitment system, abolishing the one-year military service. However, the law also stipulated that men have the obligation to perform military service, so it was changed to a four-month military training service without amending the law.
After Tsai Ing-wen came to power, the United States has been exerting pressure in order to "use Taiwan to contain China". First, it required Taiwan to strengthen its reserve combat capabilities. Second, it proposed extending the service period and resuming military conscription. Tsai Ing-wen did not dare to offend the United States, but was also afraid of losing the votes of young people, so she made a fuss about the reserve service. In the past, she was called up 4 times within 8 years of retirement, for 5-7 days each time; now it is changed to 14 days, but it can be worth two days. Second-rate. This is a change of the soup without changing the medicine, and it will have little impact on young votes.
Two days ago, Taiwan's "Election Committee" released statistics. It is estimated that the total number of voters in the "nine-in-one" election by the end of the year will be nearly 19.3 million, of which about 760,000 are young first-time investors. When a large number of netizens saw the figure of 760,000, they all said, "The DPP is scared." No wonder they dare not announce the extension of military service to one year.
