For toilet paper, there are many different types on the market. According to the number of layers, there are 2 layers, 3 layers, 4 layers, etc.; according to the pulp, there are wood pulp, bamboo pulp, mixed pulp, etc.

Whenever there is a major e-commerce promotion, many consumers start to stock up on things, especially some basic necessities in life, such as toilet paper, shampoo, laundry detergent, etc. that are essential for home.

For toilet paper, there are many different types on the market. According to the number of layers, there are 2 layers, 3 layers, 4 layers, etc.; according to the pulp, there are wood pulp, bamboo pulp, mixed pulp, etc.

Which paper is the most practical? Which one is hygroscopic and soft?

In May 2018, "Select" in Hong Kong tested 22 types of toilet paper, covering Vinda, Jierou, Depot, Xinxiangyin, Weijieya, Select, Watsons , First Choice, and Pulppy , Mannings, Scott, Special Brand, Crown Andrex, Mr. Luck, 759 Ashin House, Dear and other brands. The

test indicators include paper strength, hygroscopicity, softness, ease of dispersion, ease of tearing off, amount of dust, paper defects, migratory fluorescent substances, hygiene, and label data.

Comprehensive test results found that no migratory fluorescent substances were detected in all sanitary rolls , and the sanitary indicators (total bacterial colonies, Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococci and coliforms) all met the standard requirements;

In addition , the quality of 4-layer paper is better than that of 3-layer paper, among which Vinda (4D three-dimensional beautiful embossed) and Jierou (4 layers of elegant and flexible) have better overall performance than ; while 8 toilet rolls such as Debao, Weijieya, and Qingrou have lower overall scores and poor performance.

Best Choice The actual net weight does not match the label, suspected of cutting corners

Among the 22 toilet paper models participating in the test, 11 samples had a weight label. By comparing the label with the actual measured net weight of each roll, it was found that Vinda (4D The actual net weight of each roll of 5 models including three-dimensional beauty embossed), Jierou (4 layers), Baobi, First Choice, and Watsons is 1g to 12.5g more than the label. The actual net weight of the remaining 6 models is 2g to 12.5g less than the label. 6.3g.

According to the national standard GB 20810-2006 "Toilet paper (including toilet paper)": the negative deviation of toilet paper roll weight should not be greater than 4.5%.

In other words, the weight of toilet paper is marked per 100g, and the actual net weight is required to be no less than 95.5g.

And the actual net weight of each roll of Best Choice (4 layers) is 6.3g less than the labeled value. The negative deviation of the actual net weight from the labeled value is 4.7% (6.3g/133.3g) > 4.5%, which does not meet the standard requirements. (Figure 1)

Vinda is stronger and the best choice has poor moisture absorption

Toilet roll paper, also called toilet paper, must withstand "pull", so the strength of the paper is not unimportant, it reflects whether the paper is easy to break .

The test includes the tensile strength of dry and wet paper, by measuring the force required to pull and tear the sample longitudinally and transversely, as well as the burst strength of dry paper. The results of

show that the tensile strength of wet paper of all samples is much lower than that of dry paper, which means that once toilet paper gets wet, it will be easier to break. If unopened toilet paper is stored in a bathroom with high humidity for a long time, the toilet paper will easily get damp and affect the strength of the paper.

The overall performance of 4-layer paper is better than that of 3-layer paper samples. Among them, uses 4-layer paper Vinda (4D three-dimensional beauty embossing) and Jiazhixuan paper with higher strength; among 3-layer paper, the special brands and Qinrou performance is better.

However, the strength of Jierou (Ace), First Choice, Baobi and Silk Clean papers is poor.

In addition, paper absorbs moisture quickly and has a high moisture absorption capacity, so it is not easy to get your hands wet when using it. Most samples perform better in terms of moisture absorption amount and speed, while is the worst choice (4 layers), which has a relatively slower moisture absorption speed than . (Figure 2)

4-layer Vinda paper is hard, and clean and soft is more likely to be washed away

toilet paper is in direct contact with human skin, so softness and skin-friendlyness is a must.

The results of this softness test show that most of the samples have good softness. Among them, First Choice, Mannings and Qinrou are relatively better, while 4-layer Vinda (4D three-dimensional beauty embossing), Silk Clean has a lower rating.

The degree of ease of dispersion reflects whether the paper fibers can be quickly dispersed by water, which is conducive to sewage discharge and is not easy to block sewers.

test: Put a sample cut into a diameter of 55mm into a container containing 500mL of water, then rotate the aqueous solution, and observe the degree of damage to the paper every 1 minute until the 10th minute. The results of

show that 4 and 3-layer Jierou and Silkjet are easier to wash away , but the 3-layer paper of Vinda (Smart) and Weijieya (extra long version) although the paper is tattered after 8 minutes, but the observation There must be larger pieces of paper scraps, which require a longer time to be flushed away. However, the Special Offer, Mr. Lucky and Qinrou still have larger pieces of paper scraps after 10 minutes, and it takes a longer time to be flushed away.

▲Dispersibility test

In addition, holes are usually added between each grid of toilet paper to facilitate consumers to tear off the required number of sheets for use. Generally speaking, if the holes are closely arranged and neatly defined, the paper will be easier to tear off; otherwise, greater force may be required. The test results of

show that most samples of are relatively easy to tear off along the holes, except for 759 Ashin House, which is difficult to tear off due to insufficient hole density and tough paper. (Figure 3)

Qinrou has more dust, and Weijieya paper is more wrinkled

If the toilet paper contains a large amount of fiber or dust when it is torn, it may affect the breathing of consumers. The

test is determined by hitting an entire roll of toilet paper and then weighing the amount of dust or paper dust released. Among the 22 toilet rolls, , First Choice and Qinrou released the most dust, . Although the other samples also released dust, it was relatively slight and would not affect the respiratory tract during normal use.

In addition, if the paper has defects such as impurities, holes or wrinkles, it will directly affect the product quality. Weijieya (4 layers) and Crown have more wrinkles, so the score is lower. (Figure 4)

How to correctly choose and store toilet paper?

1. It is recommended to buy products with heavier paper per load, tightly rolled paper, less likely to sink when pressed by hand, large paper roll diameter but thin paper tube. Additionally, embossed toilet paper is usually rolled loosely.

2. To contribute to environmental protection, try to cherish the paper you use. If you feel that the quality of 3-ply toilet paper is enough for daily use, there is no need to buy 4-ply toilet paper.

3. The outer packaging of toilet paper and each roll of paper are generally packed in plastic bags, but the sealing after use may not be complete. Therefore, toilet paper should be stored in a dry and ventilated place as much as possible. It should not be stored in a humid and unventilated bathroom to avoid Prevent moisture intrusion, which affects the quality of paper products and is more likely to breed bacteria.

Is "yellow toilet paper" better than white?

There are many yellow toilet paper or tissue paper on the market claiming to be "original pulp" or "natural color". This type of paper is generally made of bamboo pulp, wood pulp, platycodon, etc., so this kind of toilet paper is more durable than white toilet paper. OK?

"Consumer Reports" interviewed Chen Yang, director of the Guangdong Paper Research Institute, who explained: "Today's yellow toilet paper or tissue paper usually refers to paper that has not been deeply bleached, and some products use bleached pulp mixed with unbleached pulp. Made, since the color of the pulp is mainly composed of lignin tape Therefore, it is also possible to use other non-bleaching channels to remove lignin. "

He said: "Regular 'yellow paper' is basically no different from white paper in terms of function and use experience, but from an environmental protection perspective, Since there is no bleaching process, the wastewater discharge caused by bleaching will be reduced accordingly, so it is more environmentally friendly.”
