Recently, the Tianjin Dodgers Baseball Stadium renovation project completed by Tianjin Construction and Design Institute No. 3 was completed and opened to the public. It is temporarily used as the sales office of Tibei Luneng Mansion, and has received widespread attention from the industry and outside. This design of

takes "new crowning, old feelings" as the design starting point, and successfully creates another classic case of retaining, utilizing, transforming and renewing existing buildings.

Historical background

Tianjin Dodgers Baseball Stadium was once the home stadium of the Tianjin Lions (Tianjin Baseball Team) and is located near Tianjin Sports Institute in Hexi District, Tianjin City. Construction was completed in 1986. The stadium was built with the help of the Los Angeles Dodgers, hence its name. It is the first international standard baseball stadium in New China. In 1991, it hosted the 16th Asian Baseball Championship and various international friendly matches, witnessing the Tianjin Lions winning many championships. It is an important landmark of Tianjin baseball.

Design Concept

Urban renewal is not about simply tearing down and starting over, but injecting new blood into old organizations and new vitality into old buildings, so that history can be continued and reborn in real life.

As a witness to the glorious history of Tianjin baseball, the Dodger Baseball Stadium has been preserved. The design must reproduce the style of the "old" building while meeting the "new" functions. How to inherit the history while facing the future is whether the Dodger Baseball Stadium can be nirvana. The key to new life.

The Crowned Lion

design uses the "Crowned Lion" as the design vision through the dialogue between old and new elements to "gently wear a crown" for the Dodger Stadium stands. The

project uses aluminum plates and glass as the main materials, combined with a unique architectural shape to reflect a sense of lightness and the future. The novel design method not only continues the championship context, but also creates an iconic architectural image, while forming a highly intense visual and spatial experience. Through renovation, the weather-beaten baseball stadium has been "transformed" into an experience sanctuary for understanding Tianjin's baseball culture.

Dialogue between old and new

The project adheres to the principle of respecting and presenting history to preserve the existing buildings to the greatest extent, and only uses repair measures to restore the original appearance of the more seriously damaged wall parts.

Most of the walls have been repainted with a translucent concrete protective agent, naturally retaining traces of history. The newly added "crown" forms a sharp contrast with the "renovated old" walls. Light and heavy, new and old, history and future meet here unexpectedly, playing a gorgeous movement together. The

internal and external transformation

project fully explores the stands as the most representative part of Dodger Baseball Stadium and creates the feeling of traveling through time and space. With the clever intervention of the new volume, the interior of the “Crown” is naturally divided into two parts by the stands, forming a foyer under the stands and an exhibition hall on the stands.

The original spiral staircase in the foyer is retained as a space embellishment. Climbing up the stairs, you can enter the "inside" of the transformed stand.

With the change of space attributes, the building's functions have become more diverse:

- here you can relive a classic baseball game,

you can hold a major press conference,

you can even listen to a concert.

It is this infinite possibility that brings infinite vitality to old buildings.

Social Value

The renovated Dodger Baseball Stadium not only amazed the time, but also revived history. It will surely become a landmark building that carries the past and the future, passing on the legend of the Lions!
