Monk Huayan was an eminent monk during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty. His lay name is not recorded in historical materials. Monk Huayan lives in the north of Youzhou City. He has read, upheld, and recited the Huayan Sutra all his life. He is able to understand and understand the allusions in the sutra by heart.
When he recited the Huayan Sutra, his words were clear and his voice was loud, so that people far away could hear it clearly, as if he were listening in front of a Huayan monk.

That night, Zhang Renyuan was walking in the hall after dinner. Suddenly he heard someone reciting the Huayan Sutra. The voice was beautiful and melodious. Zhang Renyuan listened with gusto and was mesmerized.
Early the next morning, Zhang Renyuan said to his wife: "Last night there was a monk reciting the Huayan Sutra in the north of the city. I heard it clearly, as if the monk was reciting outside the gate of the Dudu Mansion. Did you hear that sound?"
Zhang Renyuan's wife replied: "I heard it, but the north of the city is so far away from us. How could it be that the sound came from the north of the city? "Zhang Renyuan said to his wife, "If you don't believe me, you can send a servant to the north of the city to check if there is a monk chanting."
My wife sent a servant to check and found that it was indeed a monk chanting. This monk was naturally the monk Huayan.
Zhang Renyuan admired Monk Huayan very much and ordered people to invite Monk Huayan to the city to meet him. After the meeting, Monk Huayan didn't wait for Zhang Renyuan to speak, and said first: "Since the Governor has a kind heart to give, why don't you put it into practice as soon as possible?"
Zhang Renyuan replied: "Master, you are really a divine monk who predicts the unknown. I have prepared five hundred cassocks and want to donate them to your temple, but I haven't had time to donate yet."
Monk Huayan declined and said, "There is no need to send cassocks to the temple where I live. Sir, you can send the cassocks to Zhulin Temple in Ma'anshan in the west of the city. The monks there are short of cassocks."
Zhang Renyuan immediately agreed and sent a team of soldiers with spices and clothes to Zhulin Temple in Ma'anshan to deliver cassocks. Unexpectedly, when these soldiers arrived at Ma'anshan, they could not find the Zhulin Temple.
So they continued deeper and climbed to the top of the mountain. There was an old man with a white beard on the top of the mountain. When the old man learned that these people were looking for Zhulin Temple, he smiled and said, "I know where Zhulin Temple is. Come with me."
Everyone was overjoyed and followed the old man. The old man walked with everyone for a while, and suddenly the white mist in front dispersed, and a magnificent temple appeared in front of everyone. Inside, there were Qihuayao grass and seven treasures piled up, like a heavenly palace.
Everyone entered the Zhulin Temple and distributed cassocks to the monks. After counting, only 498 cassocks were sent out, and two monks did not come to receive the cassocks.
When the old man saw it, he said to everyone: "You can take these two cassocks back, one for Master Zhang Renyuan and one for Monk Huayan."
Everyone stayed in Zhulin Temple for one night. As soon as they walked out of the temple the next day, the temple disappeared in an instant and turned into a ball of white mist.
They returned the same way, and Zhang Renyuan asked them where they had been and why they had waited a whole year before they came back. After hearing this, these people suddenly realized that the Zhulin Temple they went to was not a human temple, but a holy temple; as for Monk Huayan, he was a divine monk who came from the Zhulin Holy Temple to the human world to be compassionate and helpful to the world.
years later, Monk Huayan passed away peacefully. After his death, his "physical body did not wither," and he was shaped into a golden Arhat by his disciples, who worshiped him devoutly.
