People's Liberation Army General Hospital is located near Wukesong, Haidian District, Beijing. This hospital is famous all over the world. The superb medical skills and first-class equipment have attracted patients from all over the country to come for medical treatment. As China's top military hospital, it has also long served as the medical care mission for the head of the Central Military Commission and the cadres of the headquarters.
It can be said that this hospital not only occupies a very important position in the military system, but also has great influence in the medical community at home and abroad. However, many people of the older generation like to call this hospital another name: 301 hospital .
This is because its predecessor was based on the 301 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army and was transformed into the current General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army. It is mainly responsible for the medical tasks of the leaders of the Central Military Commission and other agencies. Although it is not large in scale, do not underestimate this 301 hospital. This place has been responsible for the treatment of many chiefs and dignitaries, and has been admitted to many "special" patients.
301 The establishment of the hospital
Union Hospital was founded in 1921. Later, it was forced to cease operations due to the Anti-Japanese War. It did not recover for nearly 20 years and was not re-established until 1948. During the War of Liberation, Peking was peacefully liberated, and the People's Liberation Army took over the Union Hospital, which was very famous at the time.
The same name as this hospital was the People's Liberation Army Peace Hospital at that time. This Peace Hospital located in Yan'an assumed the role of the People's Liberation Army General Hospital during the Anti-Japanese War. Later, after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Heping Hospital moved to the Northeast, and the headquarters staff were very few and often in flux.
After the founding of New China, Union Hospital was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health. At that time, many domestic and foreign dignitaries came here to see doctors. The Korean War broke out. In order to better undertake the medical tasks of the leading cadres of the agency, the Second Clinical Hospital of Union Medical College Hospital was established in 1953. Most of the medical staff here were transferred from Union Medical College Hospital.
Later, in consideration of safety and security, the hospital was renamed "Hospital Directly Affiliated to the Military Commission". After came under the jurisdiction of the military, just like the army had its own number, the hospital also had to have a code name, so the hospital code was named "301" , and this is the historical origin of the 301 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army that people are familiar with.
Then why did it later become the General Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army?
This incident is inseparably related to Admiral Hong Xuezhi. Since the founding of New China, the door of Union Hospital has been broken through by countless people every day. Among them were ordinary people, military cadres, and some foreigners, so Premier Zhou went to Hong Xuezhi, the director of the Logistics Department of the People's Liberation Army, for discussion.
Premier Zhou said to Hong Xuezhi: "Today I will discuss with you the ownership of Union Medical College Hospital. Currently, Union Medical College Hospital is under the control of the military, but foreigners often go to see doctors. It is always inconvenient for the military to manage foreigners. It is better to assign Union Medical College Hospital to the Ministry of Health."
After hearing this, Hong Xuezhi also felt that there were some problems. After all, many chief ministers were treated in Union Hospital. There were so many people and so safety could not be guaranteed. However, the army only had such a large and high-level hospital, which was transferred to the Ministry of Health, and the army was gone. Thinking of this, Hong Xuezhi told Premier Zhou what he thought.
"Prime Minister, you said that we have been considering this issue. It is indeed inconvenient for soldiers and foreigners to see a doctor together. The procedures and systems are also different, and it is not conducive to confidentiality. We have no objection to handing over Concorde to the Ministry of Health, but we hope that after handing it over, the army will build a military-wide general hospital as soon as possible."
After getting Premier Zhou's consent, Hong Xuezhi began to actively plan. In his opinion, since it was going to be done, it should be done on a larger scale. In December 1956, Hong Xuezhi put the matter on the agenda. After getting approval from the Military Commission, Hong Xuezhi began to think about the geographical location.
Considering that it must be easy to manage and transport, and it must not be too far away from military agencies and cadres, he chose the area near Wukesong .As for the name, Hong Xuezhi believes that since it is a hospital of the People's Liberation Army, it should be called the General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army.
Because of the nature of its military missions, Hong Xuezhi took notice of the 301 Hospital, which was once separated from the Union Medical College Hospital. In the end, he decided to use the 301 Hospital as the basis, then expand its strength, increase equipment and scale, and establish the People's Liberation Army General Hospital.
Once there is a place, there must be talents. General Hong Xuezhi considered that one of the important tasks of the hospital is to be responsible for the health care of the heads of the Military Commission, so the director must be someone who is familiar with the chiefs. After a series of screenings, Jin Laichuan, director of the Northwest Military Region General Hospital, was transferred here to serve as the first director.
The candidate for the dean has been confirmed, and we cannot let him act like a mere commander. In order to set up the hospital, Hong Xuezhi persuaded 80 military cadres from Union Hospital to come over, and also invited many medical bigwigs from other hospitals to take charge.
After more than a year of preparation, in June 1957, the outpatient building of the PLA General Hospital was officially opened in Wukesong. Although the Central Military Commission officially designated it as the "General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army", because it is the predecessor of the 301 Hospital, many people habitually call it the "301" Hospital.
Many "special" patients
The south building of this hospital is a very mysterious place, and ordinary people will be warned even if they approach it. Because most of the people who receive medical treatment and recuperation in the South Building are military and political officials, leaders of many countries have received medical treatment here, and Deng Xiaoping is one of them.
Deng Xiaoping was admitted to the 301 Hospital in the winter of 1976. At the time, he was 76 years old and needed surgery. Moreover, the country stipulated at that time that operations on the chief must be reported to the Military Commission, and the operation could only be performed after approval by the Military Commission. Later, Chairman Hua personally approved the operation before it could be performed.
The doctor who operated on Deng Xiaoping at that time was named Li Yantang. Because of his identity, the medical staff in the operating room were a little nervous. Mr. Deng also saw everyone's nervousness and said to them: "I believe in your hospital and that you will do your best. There are no absolutes in the world. If something goes wrong, I will be responsible."
The doctor was supposed to comfort the patient, but Deng Xiaoping comforted the doctor in turn. The operation was successful and the bleeding was very small, but he needed to rest. In order to maintain confidentiality and security at that time, Deng Xiaoping lived on the fifth floor of the south building, and he was the only patient living on this floor.
This was the first time that Deng Xiaoping entered the 301 Hospital. After being discharged from the hospital in 1977, Deng Xiaoping also officially returned. One of the starting points for him to make great contributions to the country was in the 301 Hospital. In addition to Deng Xiaoping, Ye Jianying, one of the founding marshals, also recuperated in 301.
In 1982, Ye Jianying's health began to decline. After emergency arrangements were made to 301, she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Fortunately, the severity was not serious, but Ye Jianying could not walk normally. In 1985, Ye Jianying's condition worsened, and the central government issued three illness notices in succession.
In those days, in order to prevent backup, we arranged for the Great Hall of the People to stop all activities. Finally, under the careful care of medical staff, the condition finally stabilized. However, after more than three years of continuous medication, Ye Jianying's body's upper limit began to decline, and her life was in danger. After examination, surgery was required.
The operation is not very big and is very simple for ordinary people. However, for elderly and seriously ill people like Ye Jianying, the risk is very high. So the matter was reported to Hu Yaobang, and after approval, the operation was directly performed in Ye Jianying's bedroom.
The operation was successful in the end, and with careful medical care, Ye Jianying did not die until 1986.
301 The hospital also treated a national hero, the famous Qian Xuesen. Before Qian Xuesen retired, he was focused on work. Every time his work unit arranged a physical examination, he thought he had no time to kill it. After retirement, he had more time, so he went to the physical examination arranged for him by the 301 Hospital.
However, after the physical examination results came out, it was found that Qian Xuesen had bladder cancer . The leaders of the 301 Hospital attached great importance to this and conducted a second review. The result was that bladder cancer was diagnosed. Because it was discovered relatively early and the cancer is still in its early stages, it is not difficult to treat.
However, Qian Xuesen, who was over eighty years old, became a little taciturn due to medical treatment. Later, the attending physician Zhao Juchun sometimes asked him some arithmetic questions in order to regulate his emotions. Every time Qian Xuesen could answer them quickly and would tell the doctor that he was a scientist.
At that time, Qian Xuesen often called himself "little brother" when he was hospitalized, because he was on the same floor as Marshal Nie Rongzhen, who was involved in the development of the atomic bomb . In 1992, Marshal Nie Rongzhen died of illness in the 301 Hospital. Later, Qian Xuesen's patient became the People's Liberation Army Major General Li Fuze.
After Li Fuze passed away in 1996, Qian Xuesen met an old acquaintance in the 301 Hospital, Su Zaishan, who was also a major general of the People's Liberation Army. Qian Xuesen watched these old friends who fought together leave him one by one. Qian Xuesen said that although he lived longer than them, he was their little brother.
Fame overseas 301
In addition to domestic political figures, even leaders of some countries with good relations with China often go to 301 for medical treatment.
In October 1967, Ho Chi Minh, then general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, came to Beijing 301 Hospital for medical treatment. At that time, Ho Chi Minh was hospitalized in the 301 Hospital for half a year due to an illness in his nervous system. After leaving the 301 Hospital, he was transferred to Yuquan Mountain for recuperation, and the medical staff arranged by Premier Zhou all came from the 301 Hospital.
By April of the next year, Ho Chi Minh's body was recovering well. Not long after leaving Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh was lying on the hospital bed again due to myocardial infarction. This time Premier Zhou found the 301 Hospital and sent Dr. Huang Wan to Vietnam on a business trip to treat Ho Chi Minh. Huang Wan participated in the consultation with Vietnamese doctors in Vietnam.
Vietnamese doctors admired the medical care provided by the 301 hospital so much that they immediately removed their original treatment plan and adopted the new plan given by Huang Wan. It didn't take long for Ho Chi Minh's condition to stabilize. After waiting for another month and seeing that Ho Chi Minh's health improved, Huang Wan returned to the country with the medical team.
During the treatment process, Vietnam's senior leaders were very fond of Huang Wan and others and were impressed by their medical treatment. specially awarded them medals before leaving.
In addition to Vietnamese leaders, in 1970, the 301 Hospital was also tasked to go to Albania to treat their country's leader Hoxha . After Hoxha's heart problem was discovered, his health care doctor told him: "There is a doctor with good medical skills in China who can cure him."
So the phone call came to Premier Zhou, who asked the 301 Hospital to send a working group to fly to Albania. At that time, medical staff examined Hoxha and immediately launched corresponding treatment plans. It was not until his condition stabilized that the medical team took a special flight back to China.
In 1973, Vietnam's senior leader Huang Wenhuan wanted to go to Germany for treatment for lung cancer. As a result, when passing through Pakistan, they went to the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan to report to the country: hoped that Huang Wenhuan could be sent to China's 301 Hospital for treatment. After the central government agreed, the hospital quickly set up a special medical team for Huang Wenhuan.
The organization specifically stated that at the 301 Hospital, Huang Wenhuan and other Vietnamese leaders deliberately changed their routes and flew to China to seek treatment. This is a sign of trust in Chinese medical staff. Therefore, in order to be cautious, 301 Hospital specially cooperated with experts from Beijing Tuberculosis Hospital and Cancer Hospital for joint consultation.
After more than half a year, Huang Wenhuan’s tumor removal surgery was successfully completed. At that time, Huang Wenhuan's life was extended for another ten years because of the treatment provided by the 301 Hospital. For this reason, Huang Wenhuan praised China's 301 Hospital many times in public.
Today's 301 Hospital has a new building, and brand-new walls have replaced the worn-out bricks and tiles, leaving behind the same "medical skills and ethics" as always.Most of the people who participated in this testimony have passed away, and they can only read a few words about the 301 Hospital from historical materials.
