Recently, even former stubborn "Taiwan independence" member Shi Ming-teh, former chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party, stood up and persuaded Tsai Ing-wen that the only way out is to withdraw troops from Kinmen Matsu, negotiate with the mainland and peacefully resolve the Taiwan Strait.
According to Taiwanese media reports, recently, former DPP chairman Shi Mingde said in an open letter that due to the "weak defense" between Kinmen and Matsu, once there is a conflict between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, the Taiwan military will be unable to protect these two places. Therefore, he called on the Tsai Ing-wen authorities to withdraw troops from the two places of , Jinma, , and build it into a "peaceful special zone." He believes that for a long time, both Jinma and Ma have been the most sensitive areas of cross-strait relations. Therefore, by removing the fuse , which is most likely to cause conflict, can achieve a comprehensive avoidance of the mainland. Moreover, this move can also represent the "olive branch" extended by Taiwan to the mainland.

However, unlike in the past, Shi Mingde has changed his attitude of "resolutely protecting Taiwan" this time and has actually called for a peaceful solution to the Taiwan Strait issue to the Tsai Ing-wen authorities. According to Shi Mingde, cross-strait issues can only be resolved through negotiation and peaceful means. Moreover, this is also the common vision of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. He believes that "avoiding war" and "not provoking" are not signs of weakness, because if world peace and permanent peace between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are to achieve, Taiwan must take this step.
It is understood that Shi Mingde once put pressure on Tsai Ing-wen, asking him to swear to "sustain and die with Taiwan." Obviously, Shi Mingde's softening attitude may have the element of "realization", but his lines are still filled with a strong sense of "Taiwan independence".
Take the "world peace" mentioned by Sch Ming-Teacher and " cross-strait permanent peace" as an example. It is obvious that there is only one way to realize this vision, that is, cross-strait reunification. But Shi Mingde only emphasized "avoiding war" and "not provoking", which is the difference between this and the "not allowing unilateral changes to the status quo of the Taiwan Strait" that the United States, Japan and other countries had hyped earlier.
It is undeniable that the effect that Sch Mingde can achieve when he proposes to build the two places of Jinma into a "peaceful special zone". But at the same time, he also made it clear that before the Taiwan Strait issue is resolved, Taiwan needs to enhance its self-defense capabilities. So, who does Shi Mingde want to defend against? If external forces attack, the People's Liberation Army is fully capable of defending sovereignty and territorial integrity. Obviously, Shi Mingde's so-called enhancement of defense capabilities is mostly aimed at targeting the People's Liberation Army.
In this regard, analysts believe that Shi Mingde has most likely to have two purposes for speaking out at this time.
First of all, the DPP's failure in the "nine-in-one" election declared the complete failure of Tsai Ing-wen and others' "anti-China card". At present, public opinion on the island is obviously more inclined to the "promotional" voices made by former Kuomintang Hong Hsiu-chu and others. There is no doubt that if the DPP insists on taking the path of "using foreign countries to seek independence", the votes in the hands of Taiwanese people will be enough to repeatedly face major failures. So, on the surface, Shi Mingde seems to be "providing suggestions" for peace between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, but in fact, he probably wants to remind Tsai Ing-wen to "avoid the edge for the time being" first.
In recent times, the United States has frequently hyped the topic of arms sales to Taiwan, which has largely put cross-strait relations in a highly tense situation again.Against this background, Shi Mingde's statement will more or less make Tsai Ing-wen a little more sober.
Secondly, the "harmony" on the island is blowing strongly. If the DPP wants to regain the support of public opinion, it can only follow the crowd. But it is obvious that even if Tsai Ing-wen, Lai Ching-te and others suddenly change the direction of the wind, not many people would believe it. Therefore, some words may be able to achieve unexpected results when said by an "Taiwan independence" element in his 80s. Because this will create an illusion for the outside world that as we grow older, the stubborn "Taiwan independence" elements will also "realize". In this way, the Taiwanese people can regain some expectations for the Tsai Ing-wen authorities.
Generally speaking, the premise for a peaceful resolution of the Taiwan issue is based on the one-China principle, and Shi Mingde's statement does not have much reference value. No matter whether Tsai Ing-wen can listen or not, the mainland will never give up on the process of promoting the unification of the cross-strait. As for the way, the key is to look at the performance of the Taiwan authorities. We will resolutely crush all attempts and actions that hinder the reunification of the motherland!
