I want to move, can't it?
Not long after, the back door opened. My partner and I quickly entered the house and saw an old man with white hair sitting straight at the table. We immediately stepped forward for a preliminary inspection and tried to talk to the old man. The old man had no expression on his face, looking straight ahead with his eyes, without responding at all.
basic examination results show that he has no abnormalities or discomfort. After asking about the family present, no one seemed to want to say much. According to the procedure, we can take the old man to the hospital for examination, but we still respect the wishes and ideas of our family.
Finally, the old man's son, the middle-aged man outside the bedroom door when we came in, shook his head, sighed, and said in fluent English: "Take him to the hospital... at least it will be safe tonight, , lest he thinks of dying ..."

Since the son said this, we must take the old man to the emergency department for evaluation in the procedure. The old man continued to react without any resistance, but followed us into the ambulance without any resistance. When filling in the information, I saw the old man’s surname: Chao, Zhao; when I saw the old man’s birthday, , 103 years old ! I was in poor mathematics, so I took out my phone and made it clear again. Yes, I was 103 years old!
I thought to myself, if you are Chinese and at this age, then the chance of speaking Mandarin (or other dialects) should be not low. But... I had a prejudice before. I would like to ask again. Assuming he is Chinese and speaks Mandarin, will he offend the old man instead? I was hesitant. Because I usually dislike others because I am an oriental, I have made various assumptions: good mathematics, good homework, at least one musical instrument, etc. None of these is correct in me!
"Is your surname Zhao?" In the end, I couldn't help but ask with the most cautious attitude. The old man's confused eyes suddenly focused, and he still didn't say a word, but he slowly turned his head.
" You... can speak Chinese? " The old man spoke!
"Yes, Grandpa Zhao, are you okay?" Usually at this time, whether in Eastern or Western culture, it is natural to continue saying that everyone is worried about you and the like. But at this time, I just want to focus on the elderly, instead of making him feel implicated and worried.
Although telling the other party that many people are worried about him can be a sign of concern, letting the other party know that he is loved and cared about by others, such words can easily cause pressure on the other party, which may make people feel guilty if they are burdened by others and think that they are dragging others down. I want to simplify the situation. Our time is limited, and the elderly are willing to speak, which is a good start.
"How am I? I am at my age, I can eat, sleep and walk, what do you think?" the old man asked me back.

It seems that I have encountered an opponent today. Usually, I use short and open questions to exchange for the other party's lengthy answers. In an instant, it seemed that I switched my operating mode from an emergency ambulance to a psychologist.
"Grandpa Zhao," I took advantage of the ambulance's sharp turn and slid to him and sat down, saying with an innocent look: "This sounds good, but you shouldn't be very good when you sit in the ambulance with me now, right?" I tried to tell the facts and guess less. The old man looked at me, looked around, took a big breath, nodded first, then shook his head and said, " I'm tired..."
What does this mean? Are you tired and wanting to sleep, mentally exhausted, or mentally exhausted? I didn't respond, but my eyes remained close to the old man's eyes, indicating that I was listening and thinking, and I was trying to connect with him and had the will to intersect with his world.
" Do you know what it feels like to live in a hundred years? " I smiled. Obviously he knew the answer, but I still shook my head.
" When you no longer feel that it is related to this world . When a friend who can talk to you, his partner is no longer there. When there is nothing in life that can make you interested in . I came to this world and did everything I should do and wanted to do.My son's life and grandson's growth didn't bother me, and it was getting farther and farther away from me. I am very satisfied with my past life . But I don't want to be here now! I miss my wife, my old friends, my brothers and sisters, they are not here anymore. I want to go where they go. I have no nostalgia for this world. I wanna go. I'm tired. ”
is tired.
In an instant, I seemed to feel the exhausted heaviness and the bored helplessness. He is tired, can't he do it? One night, so many family members and strangers knocked on the door and drilled the locks to dig him out of the bedroom and from home. The laborers mobilized many people to hire an ambulance with flashing lights and whistles and bumpy driving. Why? He has no nostalgia for his current situation and wants to "move" on . Isn't it possible? Now being sent to the emergency room of the hospital, in addition to being physically checked, his son mentioned that he "wanted to die" of , and he also needed to undergo psychiatric evaluation and diagnosis, which is a very troublesome process.
*Suicide is not the only way to relieve pain
suicide should be a unique behavior belonging to humans. Although there were some reports of animal suicides in the past, it is impossible to determine whether these behaviors that seem to be suicides are suicides. With current science and technology, it is like it is impossible to know whether animals have ideas. However, humans commit suicide have the opportunity to clearly state or record the intention, behavior, motivation and reason for suicide.
Suicide is basically considered unacceptable from a historical or religious perspective. However, Plato lists four exceptions: the first one, moral loss, and cannot save . The second type is death penalty , which means that the government ordered suicide, just like Socrates was forced to take poison in the end. The third type is that is forced to experience due to the inevitable extreme misfortune. The fourth type is feels ashamed of its extremely unfair behavior . The third type above
is sometimes cited as the basis for euthanasia. The main arguments in support of euthanasia stem from any living being born with the instinct to avoid pain and seek comfort. What Plato said about "the inevitable extreme misfortune experience" can force people to end their lives to escape the pain caused by misfortune experience. Many people believe that avoiding pain and pursuing happiness is not just a choice, but our power.

From the perspective of clinical psychology, suicidal tendency, intention or behavior must be the focus of evaluation and diagnosis. My personal idea is that if the suicide is caused by a mental illness, this suicide is not an exception listed by Plato. There are two main reasons:
1 . If most psychological/mental diseases are used, there are currently effective treatment methods. The pain factors that cause a person to commit suicide can be slowed down or even relieved. Of course, the focus should be on treatment, rather than using suicide to relieve pain.
This is like a physical disease, such as gallstone , which will cause a great pain in the patient. If the pain cannot be eliminated, the patient may say that he would rather die because he cannot bear such pain. However, it is not difficult to use current medical technology to solve the problem of gallstones. It is unimaginable if the patient insists on not receiving treatment but seeks death due to the pain.
Second, the mental illness itself, such as severe depression or bipolar disorder, is a disease that will affect the patient's cognition and thinking patterns. Patients will feel hopeless and think they have no choice.
To use the gallstone example just now, it is a fact that there is stone in the gallbladder, and it is also a fact that there is pain. However, cognitive distortion or error caused by psychological diseases may make the patient believe that surgery or other treatment methods are useless, and they believe that they are like this and will continue to suffer!
Sometimes, when faced with depression patients, I would think: If I have the same perception as them, I also think that nothing I do is useless, I will definitely be depressed... This kind of hopelessness, choiceless thought, and the idea of committing suicide may be caused by the disease itself. At this time, external forces need to be used to make the patient willing to receive treatment, so the focus should be pulled back to treatment rather than deeming suicide as the only way to relieve pain.
However, Grandpa Zhao has no physical illness, no mental or psychological history, and at first glance, he has not experienced extreme misfortune. He doesn't even meet the conditions for euthanasia! When the ambulance drove to the door of the emergency room, I called out, "Grandpa Zhao..." He pulled his eyes back from afar, looked at me for the first time all night, and we were in contact with each other, and I saw deep sorrow, helplessness, and fatigue. He doesn't speak because he has nothing to say. He doesn't fight for what he wants because he has given up. His eyes no longer shine because there is no hope. Even staying in his room, he was dragged out in the end. He can only be at the mercy of others. I had nothing to say... I had to follow the standard process and handle the case step by step, and even after I handed him over to the medical staff, I couldn't keep it anymore. Even if I can stay, what can I do?

Grandpa Zhao's eyes remained in my mind and could not be removed for a long time. is promoting human rights in this way, but cannot get rid of the generation of , which is legal and moral norms. Does he have the right to choose to leave this life without attachment? Who has the right to forbid him from pursuing happiness and staying away from pain?
believes that nothing is useful. This feeling of hopelessness, no choice, and the idea of committing suicide may be caused by the disease itself.
