The "earth plane" in Chongqing's population has gradually faded out of people's travel plans with the rapid development of urban transportation. On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the completion of the Yangtze River Cableway, Zhang Rongxiang, deputy director of Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum, told the story of this Yangtze River Cableway that witnessed the development of Chongqing's urban areas. The design plan of

35 years ago. The transportation between Shizhong District ( Yuzhong District ) and Nan'an District mainly consists of buses and ferries. People can only take ferries or detours Yangtze River Bridge . Such a round trip takes about an hour. Sometimes if the fog occurs on the river, the ferry will be blocked.
Zhang Rongxiang said that in order to solve the travel problems of residents on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, Chongqing began to plan to build a cableway on the Yangtze River. After fierce bidding, the cableway was designed by Changsha Nonferrous Metallurgical Design Institute , and Shi Fengqiang served as the chief designer. Shi Fengqiang came to Chongqing for the first time in the late 1970s because he participated in the preliminary design work of Jialing River Cableway , and it was also the first time he saw the Yangtze River. The design work of
is quite complicated, and the drawings are piled higher than those of people, including mechanical equipment, civil structure, electrical system, general drawing design... In order to ensure the safe operation of the Yangtze River cableway, Shi Fengqiang and his team repeatedly calculate and verify. After half a year, the design team finally decided to adopt the country's first dual-bearing and dual traction solution to build this Yangtze River cableway.

This solution is to install two carrying cables and two traction cables on the cable carriage. This idea was the first in China at that time. has made Chongqing citizens very happy. Although the cableway ticket price is 8 cents, far higher than the bus ticket, many citizens still choose to take it. Every day from 6:30 am to noon, each van is often filled with excited people. If there is heavy fog, water rise, etc., the Yangtze River is closed and citizens cannot take the ferry, the queue in Yuzhong District can extend from Xinhua Road to Xiaoshi, and the south bank can also be lined from the boarding point to Shangxin Street. The long queue of two or three hundred meters can be seen from the two or three hundred meters.
The second year of the opening of the Yangtze River Cableway, the number of people riding exceeded one million, making it an indispensable means of transportation for the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

When it was put into use on October 24, 1987, the color of the car was beige. This color is in foggy Chongqing, and it can be seen at a glance, which is very eye-catching. The first dress-up was in July 1995, and the car was replaced with blue.
In September 2005, in order to welcome the Asia-Pacific City Mayor Summit, the Yangtze River Cableway replaced the carriage and changed the color to a festive red.
In 2011, the exterior of the car was painted to beige, giving people a nostalgic feeling, and the LED lighting on the periphery and the floor glue in the car were all updated.
In July 2016, the "2016 World Tourism City Federation Chongqing Xiangshan Tourism Summit" was held in Chongqing. The Yangtze River cable car was painted and updated again, and the tones were reflected in the main colors of the adjacent Dongshuimen Bridge .
In August 2018, in order to welcome the " Smart Expo ", the cable car painted uses traditional Chinese ink and Chongqing landmark elements.
In October 2018, the "Autumn and Winter Cableway" was unveiled. The car after the dressing was mainly orange-yellow, and the painted graphics evolved from the two words Chongqing, reflecting the "mountain and city".
In December 2019, the cableway replaced the car, replacing the first generation of car in 1987.
35 years passed by, and when I looked back, people found that everything was still the same as the Yangtze River Cableway.

Chongqing's first cross-river cableway
Speaking of the Yangtze River Cableway, many old Chongqings will think of its "brother" - Jialing River Cableway. The Jialing River Cableway, which was born five years earlier than the Yangtze River Cableway, is the first urban passenger cross-river cableway in my country. The Jialing River Cableway is a single cable traction, and its completion also provided valuable experience for the later construction of the Yangtze River Cableway.
In December 1980, the construction of the Jialing River cableway began. On the day the steel rope was put on, hundreds of police officers maintained order on the spot, and residents near the two sites were temporarily evacuated, and the flight was cut off for 12 hours. After hard work, on January 1, 1982, the Jialing River Cableway was completed and trial-passed. The cableway was 740 meters long and the maximum capacity of the carriage was 46 people, with a total investment of 3.78 million yuan. After the completion of the Jialing River Cableway, the cross-river traffic pressure in Chongqing has been alleviated to a certain extent, and the passenger cableway has become an indispensable means of transportation for citizens on both sides of the Yuzhong Peninsula and Jiangbei . Back then, the cable car ticket price was 1 cent, and it only took two and a half minutes to get from Yuzhong District to Jiangbeicheng . According to statistics, in the 1980s and 1990s, the average passenger flow of Jialing River Cableway was more than 12,000 people per day, with a maximum of 25,400 people, and was called "air bus" by Chongqing people.
Zhang Rongxiang said that the completion of this first passenger cross-river cableway in China has caused a sensation in the country. Back then, the international edition of the overseas "International Tourism" magazine also used the appearance of the Jialing River passenger cableway as the cover.
