Recently, a Taiwanese company, TSMC, was infected with a virus, which has caused a serious loss of about 1.76 billion yuan. This is the largest professional integrated circuit manufacturing service company and the first in the world. It was founded in 1987. Its current production scale can be imagined and it is already a supplier of several large electronic products and mobile phone manufacturers at home and abroad. Such a company that has many sources of supply for enterprises has been infected with the virus, and the consequences are unimaginable.
TSMC official news
According to relevant news reports, the virus infected this time is a variant of WannaCry. On the evening of August 3, TSMC's 12-inch wafer factory and operation headquarters production lines were all shut down, and several factories in other regions also stopped production one after another. It was not until August 6 that all normal production was resumed. This was the first time that production equipment and testing equipment were hit on all sides.
TSMC President Wei Zhejia responded to the widespread infection of the WannaCry variant virus in the factory. It is said that the incident was not caused by hackers and insiders, nor does it think that someone has formulated a virus to target TSMC. It is because the new machine made a mistake in operating during the software installation process, and it was not isolated or confirmed that there were no viruses, so it was connected to the internal network, which led to the rapid spread of viruses in the machine equipment and infecting all production lines. It is purely considered to be a human error.
TSMC President Wei Zhejia
But TSMC President Wei Zhejia explained this way for the serious losses of 1.76 billion yuan caused by human errors. He said: Every job of TSMC is very rigorous, and it has installed tens of thousands of machines. I was also surprised that such an incident happened for the first time. But people cannot never make mistakes, these security processes are considered operational. In the future, the system will be used to automatically detect. It can be seen that the president did not overly criticize the human mistakes of employees, but explained the reason for the virus this time with the sentence "People cannot never make mistakes."
And, regarding this accident, President Wei Zhejia also said that the station will not disclose the suppliers of new machines, and "seeking compensation" is not within their plan. However, for downstream Apple, Qualcomm , AMD Nvidia, Huawei , HiSilicon, etc., TSMC said that it will delay delivery and minimize the impact on customers.
After this virus infection incident, I believe TSMC will remember this lesson in future work and actively take safety measures to prevent the tragedy from happening again.
