United Nations Children's Fund said today that the war that has lasted for nearly 100 days in Ukraine has brought devastating consequences for children that have never been seen since World War II . Three million children in Ukraine and more than 2.2 million children in refugee host countries are now in need of humanitarian assistance. Almost two-thirds of children are displaced by war.
Destructive impact
According to the report verified by the OHCHR , on average, at least two children are killed and at least four children are injured every day - most of which occur in densely populated areas with explosive weapons. The civil infrastructure on which children rely on continues to be destroyed or destroyed, including at least 256 sanitation facilities in the eastern part of the country and one-sixth of "safe schools" supported by UNICEF. Hundreds of other schools across the country have also been destroyed. "June 1 is the International Day for the Protection of Children in Ukraine and the entire region. Instead of celebrating this moment, we are solemnly witnessing the war that has destroyed the lives of millions of children is about to enter 100 days on June 3."
protection crisis
UNICEF warned that the war has caused a serious child protection crisis. Children fleeing violence face huge risks of family separation, violence, abuse, sexual exploitation and trafficking. Most people have experienced deep trauma. These children are in desperate need of safety, stability, child protection services and psychological support – especially those who are unaccompanied or separated from their families. Most importantly, they need peace.
At the same time, war and mass displacement are destroying livelihoods and economic opportunities, leaving many families without sufficient income to meet basic needs and unable to provide adequate support for their children.
UNICEF continues to call for an immediate ceasefire from Ukraine to protect all children from harm. This includes stopping the use of explosive weapons in residential areas and attacking civilian infrastructure. It calls for comprehensive humanitarian access to safely and quickly deliver aid to children in need, no matter where they are.
