Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province and one of the four first-tier cities in China. It is known as the "three comprehensive gateway cities in the country" together with Beijing and Shanghai. It plays an important role in both economic strength and geographical location.
So, do you know the origin of the name "Guangzhou"?
Guangzhou has many names in history, such as Nanhai County, Panyu , Guangzhou, Panzhou, Xingwangfu, Wuyangcheng, etc. Among these names, the origins of Guangzhou and Wuyangcheng are more interesting.
Qin Shihuang After unifying the six countries, the land in the world was re-planned and corresponding administrative units were established. When Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors , there was a saying of "nine states", so Qin Shihuang divided the world into nine states, including " Jiaozhou ", whose capital was in Panyu, Nanhai County, which was the predecessor of Guangzhou.
Until 226 AD, Sun Quan occupied this place and divided Jiaozhou into two parts. The northwest part was still called Jiaozhou and the east part was called Guangzhou. It was from this time that the name "Guangzhou" had been circulating in history.
The origin of Wuyang City is somewhat mythical, originating from a very ancient legend.
A long time ago, there was a great famine in Guangzhou. The people did not eat a grain of rice for more than half a month, but the government still forcibly collects grain from the people.
At that time, a father and son lived in the city. Because they could not hand over the food, their father was taken away by the government and threatened their son, "If they cannot hand over the food within three days, they will kill your father!"
This young man watched his father be taken away, but there was no way to do so. He couldn't help but burst into tears. After crying for three days, he finally moved the five gods in the sky.
So, the five gods rode a sheep of different colors, took the ears of grain and handed them to the boy, so that the boy could plant them quickly and grow food. Before leaving, he told the boy that if there is any urgent matter in the future, he could go to the foot of the mountain to find them.
The young man kowtowed and thanked him quickly, and then planted the ears of grain given to him by the gods. Sure enough, a lot of grain grew immediately, and the young man immediately sent the grain to the government.
Let’s talk about the official, and it felt strange to see the young man suddenly took out so much food, so he let the father and son go openly, but secretly sent someone to follow the father and son to see what secret they had.
This young man was also very smart. He noticed that someone was following him, so he quickly ran to the foot of the mountain to find the gods and told the gods to let them leave quickly.
After hearing this, the five gods nodded and told the boy that we have planted ears of grain in this place, and you will have food to eat in a few days. After saying that, the five gods flew away, and the five sheep they rode were surrounded by officers and soldiers, turning into five big stones.
On today's Guangzhou Yuexiu mountain, there are five stone sheep. Of course, these five stone sheep are not mounts of gods, but designed by artists later. The stones turned into by the five sheep are always in the Five Immortals Temple at the foot of the mountain.
