IT Home July 20th news, Google announced in February this year that Chrome browser ushered in a new icon. Today, the official published a blog post explaining some considerations for the change of the Chrome icon.
Google Chrome Visual designer Thomas Messenger First talked about the first generation of the scrap. When they launched Chrome in 2008, the goal was to build a fast and easy-to-use browser, and nothing represents speed more than a rocket spacecraft, so a version of rocket icon was designed.
However, the Chrome team eventually decided to abandon the Rocket icon and instead adopt a design that looks approachable and easy to click, but can still capture the spirit of Google, which is the first Chrome icon.
Thomas went on to say that it hasn't been updated in eight years since the launch of the third version of the Chrome icon in 2014, and Google wants to give it a new and modern look. During the exploration stage, the designer tried various ideas, including softening the edges and corners, different geometric shapes , separating the colors with white, and further trying designs that deviate from the overall shape. You can see from the figure below.
After proposing the overall direction, the designers tested the color, gradient and scale options in different environments. For example, the designers were very satisfied with the specific green gradient in the previous icon, but after comprehensive testing, found that the gradient green was easily integrated with the default Windows 11 wallpaper (taskbar), so the gradient green was changed.
In addition, this year's new icon modified the proportion of the blue circle in the middle . The designer asked Google employees with poor eyesight and found that the blue and white parts of the new icon are easier to identify. The designers also made different versions of icons for small-sized UI to improve readability and avoid blur by aligning pixel boundaries.
IT Home learned that the new icon removes shadows, optimizes proportions and brightens the color , thereby simplifying the main brand icons to match Google's more modern brand expression. Judging from the actual installation effect, the new icon removes the shadows from the design, but still maintains a slight gradient between red, yellow and green. The icon does not look exactly the same on each platform .
