Content Introduction
books are the collection of existing personal diaries of film master Yasujiro Ozu. It has a total of more than 400,000 words. It has collected and compiled 32 diaries from director Ozu, a time span from 1933 to 1963, and recorded the true silhouette of his life and art from the age of 30 to 60. In addition to the main text of the diary, the appendix of this book also contains three parts: proofreading, movie list, and related names.
Author Profile
Yasujiro Ozu, a Japanese film director, was born in Fukagawa, Tokyo. In 1923, he joined the Kamata Studio of Matsutake Film and served as an assistant to the photography department. In 1927, he first directed the cartridge with "Blade of Confession". In 1953, he released his masterpiece "Talk of Tokyo". In his later years, he wrote a script in Takako with his partner Noda Takago.
Yasujiro Ozu is a recognized Japanese national film master in the international film industry. His films are often used as a window to understand Japanese culture. Among the fifty-four feature films he directed in his life, thirty-seven survived. In addition to the iconic "Tokyo Story", his representative works also enjoy a high reputation. There are also many rewards that have been received. For example, in 1958, he won the Minister of Arts and the Purple Ribbon Award for ", Heilongjiang ", in 1959, he won the Academy of Arts Award, and in 1961, he won the Best Director Award for the Asian Film Festival for "Autumn Days". In 1963, he was elected as a member of the Academy of Arts. He was awarded this honor for the first time.

book presents all the existing content in the diary written by Yasujiro Ozu (1903-1963) during his lifetime. The main purpose of our efforts is to help people conduct new research on this unparalleled world-wide film writer in the future. Among the existing Ozu's manuals and notebooks, it can be confirmed that there are as many as thirty-two volumes of his diary, including fragmentary records and contents that have both agenda nature (but the content written in addition to the diary record is not included. In the same diary, in addition to the diary itself, there are also diary contents recorded on the agenda. In this book, we distinguish this). Twenty of these thirty diary books were kept at Ozu's house, and twelve were found in 1989 at the home of the late Shimogawahara Tomooto, who was later returned to the Ozu's house. Among the thirty-two diaries, thirty volumes (except for the second in 1935 and the second in 1936) use various small book-style diaries. All the contents of these diary are included in this book. This is all the diary of Ozu Yasujiro that we can read now.
We learned that Ozu Yasujiro's existing diary is only equivalent to the content of about half of his life. We look forward to finding the diary of the rest of Ozu's vacant parts—whether it is—. But the reality is that we will temporarily believe that the thirty-two diary included in this book are all the existing diary contents of Ozu.
If you look at Ozu diary from a formal perspective, the daily description is relatively short, which is the characteristic of the diary. This may be because Ozu basically uses a small diary size, so it is limited by the "space" conditions. However, just like the "second" diary in 1935, although Ozu used a large diary, the content of its description seemed a little small, especially at the beginning of the "Funkawa Kamata Chapter", the shortness of its description seemed inevitable.
Ozu Diary is basically a light record of daily life and actions (including inactional accounts such as "everyday inaction", but in the "Funkawa Kamata chapter", thinking, form, and content that are completely different from daily accounts are presented on paper. For example, the diary of the first month of 1933 at the beginning of this book, as a record of daily life, we can only see that he once stayed at Takadaya Hotel in Akakura. But in fact, Sumiko Kurishima and his group also lived in this hotel at this time. He served as a friend and a ski coach for Kurishima. In the diary, this is not recorded at all. This is not something that is hard to describe, but something he thinks is unnecessary.
When Ozu started writing this diary, perhaps he did not intend to record what happened every day truthfully. Ozu's diary during this period was selective in daily life and actions. In other words, it was his purpose to record the afterimage of the heart that could cause reversal in daily life. This may be the result of his literary interest. Or it is the result of youth's vitality. The shorter the aphorism, the more effective it is. The expression is suggestive and metaphorical. These masterpieces in youth gradually developed towards the direction of sleek factual descriptions. The style of Ozu Diary has changed into an objective recording style. Compared with its later easy-to-understand content containing many biographical and chronological information, the obscure and difficult-to-understand expressions during this period seem to show more of their inner state.
In comparison, Ozu's post-war diary was more popular and smooth. He recorded the repeated situations in daily life and every day that slowly flowed. Even some major events that happen occasionally, Ozu objectively describes them. We can only see traces of his mood slight fluctuations in the diary. The space for Yasujiro Ozu's life and behavior is presented to us, but it does not overflow the small space of the diary. Just like his movie.
