Wen Shengchang, male, Han nationality, , born in November 1921, native of Guangshan, Henan. Graduated from Wuhan University in 1944. In October 1953, he was transferred to the Oceanography Department of Shandong University. In March 1956, he joined the Jiusan Society of China. In February 1983, he joined the Communist Party of China. From April 1984 to April 1987, he served as the president of Shandong Ocean University. In 1993, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Comrade Wen Shengchang is a famous oceanographer and educator in my country, a pioneer in wave research in my country and one of the founders of physical oceanography. He has made outstanding contributions to my country's marine science and education.

Comrade Wen Shengchang went to the United States for further study in 1946. He was one of the earliest scientists engaged in ocean science research in my country. He has made fruitful achievements in the fields of wave spectrum, wave direction spectrum, wave forecast method research and wave numerical model research. In the mid-to-late 1950s, he put forward the famous conclusion of "Universal Wind and Wave Spectrum and Its Application", which was known as "Wen's Wind and Wave Spectrum"; later, he proposed the "Surge Spectrum" in the research on swell and theory. The wave calculation method researched by Comrade Wen Shengchang has been widely used in China and was included in the "Technical Specifications for Port Engineering (Seaport Hydrology)" published by the Ministry of Communications in 1978. The results won the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1985 Prizes. He pioneered the research on numerical wave prediction models in my country, proposed a new hybrid numerical wave model, and put it into operational use in the national marine environment forecasting department. He is the first academician in the history of Ocean University of China and the first doctoral supervisor at the school. This path, known as the "Academician Path", is one of the spiritual symbols of the people of Hainan University.

In February 1946, 25-year-old Wen Shengchang boarded a ship bound for the United States. Wen Shengchang, who has graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Wuhan University, went to the American Aviation Mechanical School for further study as an aircraft repair shop staff. When he went to sea for the first time, he felt the power of the waves. "A ship of more than 10,000 tons floats like a leaf on the sea... If this energy can be used, it must be a very meaningful job."

From the sky To the sea, from engineering to science, Wen Shengchang had a "ridiculous" idea that made his life take a "big turn". While

was still studying in the United States, Wen Shengchang consulted marine data and combined his expertise in mechanical engineering to outline in his mind a simple device for developing and utilizing wave energy . After returning to China, he went to Chongqing to teach. In addition to teaching, he put into practice the wave power device he had designed countless times in his mind - using the vertical motion of waves to obtain electrical output, so that offshore lighthouses could glow at night and guide ships on the sea. It is understood that the lighthouses built on land at that time were equipped with navigation lights and relied on land power supply. However, the offshore lighthouses did not have navigation lights because land power could not be supplied. The wave power generation device designed and manufactured by Wen Shengchang created conditions for the installation of navigation lights on the sea. This invention not only had application value at that time, but also has application value even now.

In 1952, Wen Shengchang met Qingdao. In Qingdao, he met He Chongben, one of the founders of physical oceanography in my country. At that time, He Chongben was recruiting talents for the development of marine disciplines at Shandong University (the predecessor of Shandong University). With the efforts of both parties, Wen Shengchang entered Shandong University in 1953. From then on, Wen Shengchang was like a fish entering the sea, plowing the sea and riding the waves in this campus born from the sea, and achieved groundbreaking scientific research results on waves one after another.

In 1947, Shandong University established the Institute of Oceanography, and appointed Tong Dizhou as the director of the Institute of Oceanography and Zeng Chengkui as the deputy director. Both of them were engaged in biological research. Therefore, it was not until 1949, when He Chongben, a Ph.D. in physical oceanography, was hired by Shandong University that physical ocean science and education began. Wen Shengchang, who came to Shandong University in 1953, faced the challenge of transforming from mechanical engineering in the engineering field to marine science in the science field. He made a huge basic theoretical study plan for himself. During that transition period, he studied even harder than during college.

In 1953, he published "A Suggestion for Utilizing Ocean Power", which became the earliest academic article by Chinese scholars to discuss the use of wave energy. In the 1980s, Wen Shengchang introduced new parameters on the original basis and derived the "theoretical storm spectrum".

In the 1990s, Wen Shengchang calculated the direction spectrum, which was highly praised by the participating scholars at the 20th International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics International Association for Marine Physical Sciences academic conference in 1991.

In 1993, Wen Shengchang was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Wen Shengchang knows very well that exploring waves requires a strong team, and cultivating marine talents starts with teachers.

After graduating from university in 1962, Feng Shizuo went to work at Shandong Ocean University and taught in the Dynamic Oceanography Teaching and Research Section of the Department of Marine Hydrology and Meteorology. The teaching staff in the department is weak, and a general oceanography course requires multiple teachers to teach together, which is jokingly called "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea".

On September 23, 2000, Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation awarded Wen Shengchang the Science and Technology Progress Award, with a bonus of 200,000 Hong Kong dollars.Wen Shengchang donated half of it to the Junior High School of Zhuanqiao Town, Guangshan County, Henan Province, his hometown; and half of it was donated to Hainan University to establish the "Wenyuan Scholarship". Over the past 21 years, 63 students have received awards.

Entering the new century, Wen Shengchang took a back seat in scientific research, but he was still responsible for the editorial work of the journal. Especially with his efforts, the first issue of "Journal of Qingdao Ocean University (English Edition)" was published in April 2002.
