Flying often and accurately --The Civil Aviation Big Data Research Institute will analyze the market situation after the merger of Scoot and Tigerair from aspects such as destinations, route distribution, competitive relationship with domestic airlines, and route schedule distribution.
1. Distribution of destinations and routes
After the merger of Scoot and Tiger Airways, the aviation network will cover 61 airports in 16 countries around the world. Scoot mainly provides medium and long-distance flight services, with 14 787 Dreamliners; Tigerair's fleet consists of 23 Airbus A320 series, mainly engaged in short- and medium-distance services departing from Singapore.
After the merger of Scoot and Tigerair, they operate a total of 124 direct routes (round trip), including 48 round trip routes to China. Among them, there are 32 routes involving domestic airports and 16 routes in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
2. Round-trip domestic routes
In the first half of 2017, Scoot and Tigerair deployed approximately 946,000 flights on 32 routes to and from domestic airports, accounting for 18.6% of their total capacity.
On these 32 domestic routes to and from Changi, Singapore's airlines account for 72.3% of the capacity, while domestic airlines only account for 27.3%. Among them, Scoot and Tigerair accounted for 54.8% of the capacity.
Among the 32 domestic routes to and from Changi, the most competitive route is Changi-Guangzhou, with 6 airlines co-operating on this route. After the merger of Scoot and Tigerair, the capacity share on the Changi-Guangzhou route will reach about 30%, which will make it more competitive; China Southern Airlines and Shenzhen Airlines hold 30.2% and 7.4% of the capacity shares on this route respectively.
Scoot and Tigerair’s domestic route networks not only cover cities with greater competition such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen to meet the needs of business passengers; they also cover second-tier cities with less competition and where other airlines have not yet opened routes, such as Quanzhou (the first flight date is September 28, 2015), Wuxi (the first flight date is April 28, 2016), and Zhengzhou (the first flight date is June 29, 2016), etc.
Among the current 32 domestic routes to and from Changi, 22 are exclusive routes for Scoot and Tigerair, namely Changi-Qingdao/ Dalian, Changi-Tianjin, Changi-Shenyang, Changi-Xi'an, Changi-Zhengzhou, Changi-Wuxi, Changi-Nanning, Changi-Quanzhou, Changi-Ningbo and Changi-Jinan. In the first half of 2017, Scoot and Tigerair deployed a total of 463,000 flights on these 22 exclusive routes.
Among the current 32 domestic routes to and from Changi, domestic airlines only put capacity on eight routes: Changi-Guangzhou, Changi-Shenzhen, Changi-Nanjing and Changi-Hangzhou.
3. Route time distribution
Judging from the time distribution of Scoot and Tigerair's domestic routes, it is difficult to obtain good time resources at airports with large passenger throughput.
For example, for the Changi-Guangzhou route, the arrival time for the route from Changi to Guangzhou is concentrated at 2 am; for the Guangzhou-Changi route, the departure time is concentrated at 3 am. The same is true for the Changi-Shenzhen and Changi-Xi'an routes. The arrival and departure times are concentrated at 23:00, 00:00, 22:00 and 23:00 respectively.
In airports with smaller passenger throughput, better time resources can be obtained. For example, from Changi to Tianjin, the arrival time and departure time are concentrated at 07:00 and 09:00 respectively; from Changi to Qingdao, the arrival time and departure time are concentrated at 07:00 and 08:00 respectively.
