Maojian District 's name evolved from the name of Maojiantang Village. In ancient times, the Maojian Hall had a pointed earth beam that stretched towards the river beside, shaped like an arrow and covered with thatch, so it was named " Maojian ".

According to the "Yunyang Chronicle" in the ninth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1870), "Yunxian Tangsun is 29..., 70 miles south of the city, Maojianlutang" ("Tang" was an institution where the feudal ruling class at that time had armed personnel stationed in order to maintain local public security and convey official documents), "Maojianlutang" was set up in the current Maojiantang, which was abolished in the early years of the Republic of China. At that time, people were used to being called "Jingtang", or "Maojian" for short.

In the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947), Maojian was now under the jurisdiction of Shiyan Township, Huanglong District, Yun County. In the early days of liberation, Maojian was under the jurisdiction of Shiyan District Office in Yun County. In 1967, Erqi began to build a factory and established the Shiyan Office in Yunxian County. The current Maojian area is under the jurisdiction of Bailang, Daping, Maojian, Dachuan, Xiaochuan, Shiyan , and Maota7 Commune, Shiyan District, Shiyan Office in Yunxian County. In December 1969, Shiyan City was established, and its jurisdiction was under the jurisdiction of 7 Commune of Shiyan City, Yunyang District. In 1971, the district was abolished and merged, and the jurisdiction was managed by Bailang Commune, Shiyan Commune, Dachuan Commune and Maojian Commune. In 1973, Shiyan City was promoted to a provincial municipality, but the political district was not adjusted.

In 1980, the jurisdiction was once a street directly under the jurisdiction of two districts and an area under the jurisdiction of four major communes. In 1984, Maojian District (one of the three urban districts of Shiyan) was established based on the Wuyan Street, , Maojian Street, Shiyan Commune and Maojian Commune directly under the former Shiyan Municipal People's Government.
