Founding Prime Minister and the last emperor
In December 1959, the last emperor Aisin Gioro Puyi became one of the first batch of war criminals to receive amnesty in New China, regained freedom and opened the first page of a new life.
Looking back at Puyi's first half of his life, ascending the throne at a young age, being forced to abdicate, the coup in the Forbidden City, the storm of Tianjin, the puppet emperor, the prisoner of the Soviet Union, and the years of war criminals... Compared with the unkind life of ordinary people, every period of time and every thing Puyi experienced in the first half of his life, all the things that happened to the world.
Puyi had long thought that his life had long been the darkest moment, and there would be no new light. He would not have expected that the founding Prime Minister Zhou Enlai would show his most sincere concern for him, the last emperor. Puyi likes to write diaries, and in his diary he wrote:
"The Prime Minister is really caring for me like a parent..."

In fact, since the moment Puyi returned to China from the Soviet Union, Premier Zhou has been caring about his life. That was Zhou Enlai in Puyi's mind, the leader of the Communists, his "enemy", and the master of his current destiny.
Puyi felt that according to his past actions, he could not have a good life in the War Criminal Management Office, but Premier Zhou had already given instructions: "Don't beat or scold, do not insult and recognize, respect national customs and habits, and give special care in life."
Therefore, Puyi, who lacks the ability to take care of himself in , has received the care of many staff in the War Criminal Management Office, and can often eat food specially made for his taste. He personally felt Premier Zhou's care and therefore saw the hope of rebirth.
When interviewed by foreign journalists, Puyi said seriously:
"Under the care and education of the people's government, I realized how to be qualified to be a human being... I have changed from a ghost to a human being, and I feel truly happy... The current people's government is the only government in China's history that truly serves the people and I firmly support it."

Premier Zhou talked to him about the costumes, etiquette, etc. of the Manchu people, which made him feel particularly friendly. Seeing Puyi's restrained appearance, Premier Zhou carefully comforted him: "You have already reviewed a lot in the past, don't do any more reviews. If you have time, you can write memoirs."
Puyi felt much more relaxed when he heard this. Many people noticed that Puyi and Premier Zhou met with tears in their eyes.
Puyi walked out of prison. He had no job, no wife, only relatives of the Aisin Jueluo family. Premier Zhou cared about Puyi almost in detail. Not long after meeting Puyi and others, he met Puyi, Zaitao, Puren and other relatives in the CPPCC auditorium.

Under everyone's concern and care, Puyi, introduced by Sha Zengxi, a friend who was the editor of People's Publishing House, at the time, that he met Li Shuxian, who was a nurse. The two got married and accompanied each other. Puyi used to be the emperor, with three wives and four concubines. Now Puyi has been reborn. He told Li Shuxian: "I only then did I realize that there is such a sweet thing in the world."

In May 1962, Puyi had just half a month of marriage, and his body began to feel uncomfortable and drown. Puyi believed in traditional Chinese medicine, so he went to the Navy Hospital to seek medical treatment. The doctor prescribed traditional Chinese medicine for him, and the blood indeed stopped.
1963 A whole year, Puyi often caught a cold and a fever, so he kept going to the hospital and seeing a doctor. After a while, his health improved again.
In November 1964, a car came to Puyi's house. A staff member wearing Zhongshan uniform walked out of the car. After explaining his purpose, he learned that he was sent by Premier Zhou and invited Puyi to a banquet to meet with the VIPs. But at that time, Puyi was still in the hospital because of his poor health.
Wife Li Shuxian told the staff member: "Puyi is hospitalized."
"Which hospital is in?"
"People's hospital."
"How many days have you been?"
"More than ten days."
"How are your condition now?"
"Continuous drowning."
After a brief question and answer, the staff did not say anything more and quickly left in a car. That night, Premier Zhou made instructions: He asked to pay close attention to Puyi's disease development and organize comprehensive consultations from experts.

The next day, the famous urology expert Wu Jieping , as well as several experts from the surgery and Oncology department , all consulted Puyi. Later, under the care of Premier Zhou, Puyi was transferred to Union Hospital and was admitted to the ward of the senior officials. The medical staff took various positive measures for him to provide treatment.
At the most critical moment of Puyi's condition, Premier Zhou specially assigned a well-known Chinese medicine scientist, Pufu Zhou to treat him. Puyi needed to see a doctor almost every day. Although he asked Mr. Pufu Zhou to open a pharmacy, his condition continued to worsen.
By 1967, Puyi's body was extremely weak. He had a loss of appetite and started to pant as soon as he walked. However, he still maintained his strong vitality and struggled to get up to see a doctor. He went to several hospitals, including Union Hospital, People's Hospital, and Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine .
It is inconvenient to go out and get a taxi. Puyi and his wife Li Shuxian hire a human tricycle at a high price; sometimes Li Shuxian supports Puyi and the two walk to the hospital step by step. But even after a lot of effort, Puyi's health became worse and worse day after day.

On the evening of September 30, Puyi, who was terminally ill, might have felt that he had reached the last moment of his life. He held his wife Li Shuxian's hand and signaled her to sit by the bed, staring at his wife with both eyes, as if he wanted to look hard for a second more. When Li Shuxian saw that there were tears rolling in his eyes, she took out a handkerchief and wiped his tears.
A quiet late night, in the quiet room, Puyi and Li Shuxian were silent, and no one spoke. After a long time of silence, Puyi spoke slowly, "Let's talk about it today. I'm about to leave this world. I already understand: my illness will not be cured at all."
"I have been an emperor and a citizen in this life. My destination is fine, but now I finally come to an end." At this moment, he looks back at his life, ups and downs, which is a rare life for ordinary people. He blames himself for not being able to do anything for the party in this not-so-long life.
Then he turned to his wife Li Shuxian: "We have been married for more than five years and have to leave you alone again. I am old and have no money. I am very sorry for you in all aspects... Without me, what should you do? Who can care about you? The one I am most worried about is you."
Puyi was expressing his heart while crying, which made Li Shuxian want to cry, but she tried her best to resist the reluctance and sadness in her heart and comforted Puyi: "You don't have to worry, just take care of your illness. When you get better, let's go to Summer Palace and go to Beihai..."

Puyi passed away
In early October, Puyi's condition suddenly worsened, Li Shuxian was anxious, and the hospital ward was nervous, Li Shuxian was worried about his health and the bed, and he didn't know what to do for a moment? Pujie asked for help from the leaders of the CPPCC, and the news quickly reached Premier Zhou's office. Premier Zhou's instructions were given by four words: "Special care", and Puyi was properly placed.
On October 6, according to Puyi's wish, Li Shuxian invited his trusted Dr. Pu Fuzhou over. After he diagnosed him, he said a lot of comforting words, but his eyes and expressions were still heavy. He knew in his heart that the lifespan of this "Son of Heaven" was not long.

You should know that in the past, the emperors of the Qing court particularly valued the matter of tombs. When the emperor had just ascended the throne, he began to build tombs for himself. The location and scale must be comprehensive. So today, the Eastern Qing Tombs and the Western Tombs of Qing 1 have become emperor tombs that everyone can compete to visit.
As a citizen of the new era, Puyi's affairs were not that complicated and there was no need to build a large-scale tomb. However, as Premier Zhou said, it must still be handled in accordance with the historical habits and rules of the Aisin Jueluo family.
A group of Puyi's relatives gathered together to discuss the issue of the storage of Puyi's ashes. Puyi's seventh uncle Zaitao took the lead in proposing: "Puyi's ashes should be placed in the Babaoshan People's Ashes Hall."
Pujie supported Zaitao's opinions. He said: "We should understand the Prime Minister's instructions and cannot cause trouble for the Prime Minister. It can be placed in the mass cemetery."
"Puyi loved the lively place during his lifetime, and it was good to be with the people and the people for a long time." Li Shuxian also supported it very much.
Just like that, with the full support of Premier Zhou and with the consent of his family, Puyi's ashes were placed in Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery . On October 22, Li Shuxian, Pu Jie and others went to the Babaoshan People's Ashes Hall together to handle the ashes storage procedures for Puyi.

After Puyi's death, Premier Zhou often cared for and took care of Li Shuxian's life, making those lonely days no longer so sad. In 1980, 13 years after Puyi passed away, his memorial service was held in the CPPCC. Pu Jie held the portrait, Li Shuxian held the urn in both hands. According to the instructions of the central government, they placed Pu Yi's ashes in the first room of the Babaoshan Revolution, and buried themselves with many heroes who have contributed to the revolutionary cause.
