Recalling the past, the prosperous years

In 11842, the first Opium War, China and Britain signed the " Treaty of Nanjing", which was the first unequal treaty signed between China and a foreign country. We all memorized it when we were in school. Through its content, the Qing government opened Guangzhou, Xiamen , Fuzhou, Ningbo , and Shanghai as treaty ports, known as the " Five Ports of Trade " in history, and at the same time ceded Hong Kong Island to Britain.

In 1860, the Second Opium War, and the "Sino-British Beijing Treaty" , the southern tip of the Kowloon Peninsula was ceded to the United Kingdom.

From then on, it was not until 1898, the year of the Reform Movement of 1898, that the Qing government was forced to sign the "Special Treaty on the Expansion of Hong Kong's Boundary Site" with the United Kingdom.

This was on June 9, 1898, two days before the official start of the Reform Movement of 1898. The content was that China would occupy the rest of the Kowloon Peninsula outside Tsim Sha Tsui, which was occupied by the British in 1860, that is, from Shenzhen Bay to Dapeng Bay The entire Kowloon Peninsula is leased to the United Kingdom for 99 years, and the leased area is under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom during the lease period.

The land area of the leased area is 376 square miles, including 286 square miles of mainland and 90 square miles of islands. It is approximately 11 times larger than the land area of the original British-controlled Hong Kong Administrative Region, and the waters of the leased area are 40 to 50 times larger than before.

stated at the end of the treaty that "this treaty shall come into effect on the 13th day of the fifth lunar month in China, that is, the first day of the seventh lunar month in the Western calendar, from the date of signing." This date later became the basis and time for China and Britain to transfer sovereignty over Hong Kong.

Finally, returned to the embrace of the motherland.

Until July 1, 1997, the President of the People's Republic of China solemnly announced to the world in Hong Kong: the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government of the People's Republic of China. Since then, this day has become the anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China.
