Former residence of Yan Xishan in Hebian Village, Dingxiang County

Actually, the most important stage of Yan Xishan's life is not spent in Hebian Village. Yan Xishan began to live in Taiyuan at the age of 17 in 1900, and became the governor of Shanxi after the Xinhai Revolution in 1911. He left Shanxi in April 1949 and lived in Taiyuan for more than 40 years. At this stage, he was in charge of Shanxi. Dominate the military and political power, the most important stage of life.

Then where is his former residence in Taiyuan? According to official information, there is a former residence of the Yan family at No. 3, East Sitiao, Nanhuamen, Taiyuan, also called the Yan family residence. It is a courtyard with two small western-style buildings, covered with green all year round, and very quiet. There are two nameplates on the wall, one with Yan's family house and the other with Yan's former residence.

It is a bit strange, why not write Yan Xishan’s former residence? Is this yard the residence of Yan Xishan and his family? According to official propaganda, the two small foreign buildings were built in 1916 by Yan Xishan for his family, but he did not point out that his family lived here. It is also not clear whether Yan Xishan himself lives here.

Official publicity materials

Does this small yard really count as Yan Xishan’s former residence? I searched for several old people who knew the history of this place near Nanhua Gate and gained some different information.

The most information comes from a eldest sister named Luo, 60 years old this year, a college entrance examination in 1978, her husband is a British, and after living in the UK for many years, she now returns to Nanhuamen Dongsi Tiao No. 1 yard, where her grandfather’s Ancestral house. Sister Luo's mother was born in 1915. She was only 45 years old. She has eight siblings. She is the youngest. She was a witness to the changes of the alley when she heard her mother tell stories about neighbors in the alley.

She told me that there were originally five courtyards in this alley.

The first courtyard at the entrance is a two-in-one courtyard, very exquisite, no less than the small western-style building next door, and there was a rockery fountain back then.Mrs. Yan Xishan Xu Zhuqing habitually lives. In this case, this courtyard should be regarded as the former residence of Yan Xishan. Unfortunately, it was demolished in 2005 and the current dormitory building of the Provincial Writers Association cadres was built. It is said that it was demolished overnight.

The second yard is now listed on the Yan family house, with two small western-style houses in the east and west, which are always shaded by trees. His name is Yan Suxian, Yan Xishan's nephew. There is a saying that Yan Su was in the hardware business first; there is another saying that Yan Su first followed Yan Xishan to serve in the army. But there is a unified statement that Yan Suxian came back in the 1990s and wanted to get his house back.

The house number of this yard is No. 3, Nanhuamen Dongsi Tiao. According to Sister Luo, it is a mistake. Their yard is No. 3. No matter from the inside out, or from the outside in, their home is on the third.

The third yard is now a kindergarten. The original owner was Sister Luo’s grandfather, Zeng Jingyi. Before liberation, he used to be the director of Yan Xishan radio station and the commander-in-chief of a certain battle. Later, he conflicted with Liang Huazhi. She joined the democratic parties, and after liberation, she donated many assets such as shares of Jinhua Textile Machinery.

The word may not be correct), the position seems to be Yan Xishan's quarters chief. It is said that the home was very luxurious and advanced. The kitchen utensils and stoves were all bought from Germany when weapons were imported. Unfortunately, in the 1980s, it was demolished and the current dormitory building was built.

The innermost courtyard is also the fifth courtyard. The owner is Jia Lishan, who also serves in the army. The position is unknown, but it is definitely not a leisurely man. It was also demolished decades ago, and it is now several family buildings of Shanxi Writers Association.

In just a hundred years, the Nanhuamen Dongsi Tiao was already completely different.

Talking about the history of Shanxi, Yan Xishan is a person who can't get around. He has worked and lived in Taiyuan for 40 years, and he must have left a lot of life marks. Where is his daily life in Taiyuan? Where is his former residence in Taiyuan? It shouldn't be found in less than a hundred years.

If the first courtyard in Dongsi Tiao, Nanhuamen, was Yan Xishan's former residence, the writers association leaders who demolished them in 2005 and built their dormitory buildings would be guilty.
