At that time, his second son Li Zengguang was still young, so he asked him to pull out weeds and feed the sheep. He taught his son that feeding the sheep was so fat that it would be a comfort to the People's Liberation Army.

"Oriental Red" is born
"Oriental Red" creation is not accidental.
Li Youyuan was born in 1903 in Zhangjiazhuang, five miles north of Jiaxian Town, the town of folk songs. He was poor and had no land. He had three generations of tenant farmers. He became a shepherd boy at the age of 13. He suffered from the exploitation and oppression of the old society and only read one winter book. In one winter, he read " Hundred Family Names ", "Three Character Classic" and " Thousand Character Text ", etc., and learned a lot of words. Due to his poor family, he had to drop out of school. In order to learn more knowledge, he took the initiative to do some chores for the school, such as boiling water, sweeping the yard, sifting the ash, etc. His learning moved the teacher, so the teacher allowed him to listen.
As he grows older, Li Youyuan has to take on heavy labor and can never listen. From then on, the fields, kangs and everywhere became his learning classes. He is also good at writing folk songs and yangge , he can also play banhu , he can play sanxian , etc. Other people's lyrics, lyrics, even abandoned books became textbooks for him to study. A few years later, Li Youyuan became one of the few cultural figures in the surrounding villages. Later, he was hired by the government and worked as a clerk in towns.
In October 1935, Chairman Mao led the Central Red Army to northern Shaanxi to carry out land reform in the liberated areas. After the Anti-Japanese War, according to the instructions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, it implemented rent reduction and interest reduction in in rural areas and launched a large-scale production campaign. This made Li Youyuan very excited. He successively wrote some folk songs and yangges that promoted the revolution to perform in the villages and county towns.

In 1940, after the establishment of the democratic regime in Jiaxian, the farmers were liberated. Li Youyuan passionately wrote many propaganda revolutions such as yangge, folk song, quick-pong and small opera:
"The thousand-year-old iron tree bloomed, the poor turned over and became a family, Chairman Mao led us to make a revolution, and from then on, the poor people lived in the world..."
However, no matter which form, he always felt that he could not fully express his deep feelings for the Communist Party and Chairman Mao. He thought about it day and night and wanted to create a song to praise the Communist Party and Chairman Mao.

On a morning in the winter of 1942, Li Youyuan carried a manure bucket to Jiaxian Town to carry manure. At this time, a red sun was rising from the east, with a ray of light, the cold air on his body disappeared, and his whole body suddenly felt warm. His heart moved, "It's best to compare Chairman Mao to the sun."
When he arrived in the city, he saw another slogan "Chairman Mao is the savior of the Chinese people", so he immediately began to conceive a new song. After repeated consideration, the "Oriental Red" was finally compiled with " Riding a White Horse " as the tune.
In fact, Dongfanghong's predecessor "Riding a White Horse" is not the first original song. The original song of "Dongfanghong" is the folk song "Sesame Oil" in Northwest Shanxi: "Sesame Oil, cabbage heart, eat beans and beans cramps tendons, I don't see you for three days and I want to die, I'm so angry, oh my third brother." Later in 1938, the famous Chinese musicians Anbo and others filled in new words according to this minor key . It is called "Riding a White Horse": "Riding a White Horse, carrying a foreign gun, the third brother ate the Eighth Route Army's food, and he wanted to go home to see the girl, and shouted, and I didn't care about beating Japan..."
Until 1942, the song was rewritten by farmer Li Youyuan. From then on, a song "Oriental Red" that is as familiar as the national anthem for Chinese people was born.

1944 Spring Festival, the yangko team in Zhangjiazhuang came to the city to perform. Li Youyuan's nephew Li Zeng was the umbrella head. In the spring of 1944, Jiaxian organized more than 70 people to immigrate to Yan'an to open up land and farm. Li Zengzheng was appointed as the deputy captain of the immigration team. In order to promote the benefits of immigration, Li Youyuan created "Immigration Song" and regarded "Oriental Red" as the first paragraph of the immigration song. Li Zengzheng and his companions from the immigration team sang all the way, singing all the way to Yan'an. "Immigration Song" refreshed the military and civilians in Yan'an and was inspired by it. It was also processed and sorted by Yan'an literary and artistic workers to form the later complete "Oriental Red".
In the same year, "Oriental Red" was published in the Jiefang Daily. Once "Oriental Red" is sung, it is like having wings, flying over the Yellow River , crossing the Yangtze River , crossing the ocean and resounding throughout the world.
1951, Li Youyuan attended the Suide District Literary and Art Workers' Congress as a farmer author, and the following year, he attended the Shaanxi Provincial Literary and Art Creation Congress and won the award flag, medal, etc. Li Youyuan is also respected by people as a "people's singer."
1955, people's singer Li Youyuan died of illness at the age of 52.
