According to GI.biz, the gaming market across Europe saw sales improve in June, driven by Nintendo Switch, "Mario Strike Strike Fighter" and EA's new "F1" game.
More than 377,000 consoles were sold last month in the European market tracked by GSD Statistics, down 11% compared to the same period last year. This is due to the ongoing shortage of PS5 and Xbox Series X. However, compared to May 2022, sales were up 21.5%. This was largely due to Switch’s strong performance throughout the month, with sales up 21% compared to May and nearly 35% higher than last June. Overall, console sales are down 21% so far this year, largely due to severe PS5 shortages.
A total of 12.8 million games were sold in the European market this month, an increase of nearly 30% compared to the same period in 2021 and an increase of more than 52% compared to May 2022. 4.73 million of these games were physical boxed versions (up 24% year-over-year, 36% month-over-month), while 8.1 million were from digital download stores (up 33% year-over-year, 65% month-over-month). There weren’t particularly many new games released in May.
6’s No. 1 game is EA’s F1 2022, which achieved the feat just a week after being released. Racing games are particularly popular in the UK and Germany. It's a major launch for the new F1 game, with launch week sales up 23% compared to last year's F1 2021, which launched in July.
"FIFA 22" ranked second, followed by "Mario Strike Strikers". The game may rank higher, but Nintendo doesn't share digital sales with GSD. Mario Strikers is the best-selling physical game of the month, and the title is particularly popular in France, which accounts for more than 40% of the game's sales across Europe.
In just three weeks, the game has already outsold last year's Mario Golf Super Rush. But its sales were nowhere near the sales of 2018’s Mario Tennis Aces.
New members on this week’s ranking list include “Quarry Cry” from 2K Games and Supermassive Games, which debuted at No. 8. The horror game's sales are 19% higher than Supermassive's previous game, The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Dark Side, released last October.
In terms of accessories, 1.37 million of these products were sold in the tracked market, again led by the PS5 DualSense controller. Sales were up 24.3% compared with the same period in 2021 and 36.5% higher than in May.
