According to Taiwan Economic Daily, on December 17, TSMC President Wei Zhejia delivered a speech titled "New Challenges for the Semiconductor Industry" when attending the Yushan Technology Forum. In his speech, he stated that export controls and bans on products from other countries have destroyed the productivity and efficiency brought about by globalization, and at least reduced the benefits of the free market.
This is somewhat similar to the view that "globalization is almost dead and free trade is almost dead" recently expressed by TSMC founder Zhang Zhongmou .
Today, groups led by the United States are imposing strict restrictions on semiconductor equipment in mainland China, but Wei Zhejia believes that China and the United States can live in peace and do not necessarily have to decide the winner. Otherwise, when the free market economy is affected, the advantages of globalized production will decline, and confrontation will only make everyone miserable.
Talking about the ongoing subsidies for the semiconductor industry in various countries, Wei Zhejia said that if the semiconductor industry wants to continue to advance, talent is an important factor. Factors such as land, water and electricity are just cost issues, but talent cannot be bought and it takes time to cultivate. Indeed, most countries are currently facing a shortage of semiconductor engineers.
When talking about market rumors such as TSMC going to the United States to build a factory and its technology being hollowed out, Wei Zhejia said that "there is no door" and technology must be accumulated.
Speaking of which, it took Taiwan, China, more than thirty years to establish a complete semiconductor supply chain. Building a factory is a relatively easy step, and technology is the core factor that restricts the market.
Therefore, no matter which country or region wants to build or rebuild the semiconductor industry chain , it will take a certain amount of time and energy. During this period, it is still unknown whether the global semiconductor industry ecology will advance due to competition or retreat due to restrictions.
