On November 15, China's first and largest LNG ( liquefied natural gas ) transport and refueling ship in Nansha, Guangzhou was completed and delivered.

This ship is transformed from "Ocean Oil 301". It has a total length of 184.7 meters, a width of 28.1 meters, and can carry 30,000 cubic meters of LNG. It is the first LNG transport ship independently designed, built, managed, and operated by . It was officially put into operation in September 2015. It mainly serves the LNG second-course transfer between coastal LNG receiving stations in my country, and takes into account international short-range LNG transportation.

After the transformation, "Ocean Oil 301" will become an LNG transportation and refueling ship carrying LNG and also with LNG refueling functions. It can provide ship-to-ship fuel refueling services for large LNG fuel-powered ships berthed in domestic coastal ports.

As of now, there are more than 230 LNG recharge ships in the world. After the delivery of "Ocean Oil 301", it will be my country's first LNG recharge ship.

Why change "Ocean Oil 301" to LNG loading ship?

In order to promote my country's shipping industry to accelerate the realization of the "dual carbon" goal, the State Council issued the "Carbon Peak Action Plan before 2030", focusing on implementing the "Top Ten Actions for Carbon Peak", which clearly proposes green and low-carbon actions for transportation and promotes the low-carbon transformation of transportation equipment. At the same time, as the International Maritime Organization's requirements for new shipbuilding carbon emissions are getting higher and higher, and the use of LNG can reduce carbon emissions by nearly 25%, LNG has now become the first choice for alternative fuel as marine fuel.

LNG refueling is a key link in the fuel and water supply chain. At present, LNG fuel water refueling methods can generally be divided into tank truck refueling, shore station refueling, barge refueling, and raising boat refueling. LNG loading ships are more suitable for bulk loading, and can technically realize the filling operation simultaneously during the loading and unloading of ships, and fuel recharge is completed for busy ports and large ships without entering the port. According to reports, ship-to-ship raising can provide more efficient, timely and large-scale raising services.

What technical difficulties have been overcome in the transformation of "Ocean Oil 301"?

"Ocean Oil 301" ship was originally an LNG transport ship. This time it was built and renovated in Wenchong, which belongs to China Shipbuilding Group Guangshu International. The main reason is to add new LNG filling system, combustion device, deep-cooled reliquefaction device, mooring winch, crane and related liquid cargo control systems.

Since it is a transformation project, new functions need to be added without changing the original ship system. Among them, 70km cable and 5km pipe systems are added. The layout of equipment and laying of pipeline cables is very difficult, and the project project volume is large and the construction period is tight. It coincides with extreme weather such as high temperatures and typhoon . During the peak production period, nearly 300 people were operating on the ship at the same time, which brought severe tests to the quality management of projects, safety protection and epidemic prevention and control work, and posed great challenges to ensuring the project cycle.

LNG fuel needs to be stored in a low temperature environment of minus 162 degrees Celsius. During refueling, it must be transmitted by a special structure double-wall tube. The production and installation accuracy requirements of this double-wall tube are extremely high, and the pass rate of weld flaw detection must reach 100%, which is also one of the biggest technical difficulties in transforming the "Ocean Oil 301" wheel. Guangzhou Shipbuilding International Wenchong Construction fully utilizes the advantages of integrated construction and resource, and uses the technical experience accumulated in batch construction of LNG/fuel dual-fuel ships to complete the modification of the newly added injection system with high quality.

Since most of the "Ocean Oil 301" wheel equipment is imported, in order to implement the "national ship and national manufacturing" policy, Wenchong Construction vigorously promoted the localization of equipment during the transformation, thus solving the compatibility problem between a large number of imported equipment and domestic equipment.
