The movie "Athena" is also one of the most exciting and innovative movies of this year.
"Athena" is directed by French music and film master Romain Gavras (collaborator of Kanye West and MIA, son of legendary political filmmaker Costa-Gavras). It is a Greek tragedy presented in a cultural debate. Under the guise of war movies, the political views it tells are reckless and stupid to some, but the presentation of views is very clever, with the perfect combination of anecdotes and aesthetic imagination, so they won't let you down either.

"Athena" opens with an 11-minute action scene, from attacking the police station to chasing the highway, and then the full riots in the Athena community in France (a fictional community), the scene has been cold and harsh.

First, the medal-winning military man Abdul (Dali Bensalah) revealed at a press conference that his 13-year-old brother Idil was pronounced dead after being cruelly treated by a policeman in the Athena community. Abdul looked serious and angry. He stood next to an unknown official who asked local departments to tighten their ranks and reveal who the hell was before the situation got out of control.
But after a few seconds, the situation completely changed. The crowd gathers in the Athena community, with another brother of Abdul, the angry but terriblely calm Karim (Sami Sliman). Karim suddenly threw a firebomb into the crowd, which triggered a fierce confrontation between Athena's marginalized youth, French authorities and various crowds sandwiched in the middle.
includes a nervous policeman (Anthony Bajong ), one of hundreds of policemen ordered to storm into the community; a whispered terrorist (Alexis Manti); and Abdul and Karim’s elder brother, the hot-headed drug dealer Mokta (Vasini Embarek), who seems to just want to save his illegal business from the inevitable police raid.
The script for the movie was written by Gavras, Elias Belkeddar and Ladj Ly, who handled similar topics in a more gentle way in the 2019 film " Les Miserables ".
The three screenwriters seem to have no ability to deal with transitional plots, and the switching of scenes in the film is very stiff; while the characters they portray either yell, burst out suddenly, or both. The writers also don’t seem to imagine what it would be like to live in the Athena community if a man is not ready to fight—a world of young and angry men, strictly speaking. In the film, women eventually become four characters: crying mother, abused girlfriend, nameless gang members, and angry cousins.
also has an embarrassing ending, the story ends with Idir's death and the tensions it creates into a political plot. Worse, the final plot flip of the film almost eliminates the tension that tear apart the real French society. If Athena was a call to action, its final moments would go from a shout to a roar full of conspiracy.
But if you put these irrelevant issues aside, "Athena" is really an outstanding proof of the art of film.
