"Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards (2022 Edition)" (hereinafter referred to as the "New Curriculum Standards") was released in April 2022. The new compulsory education curriculum plan and curriculum standards for various subjects will also be implemented in the fall semester of 2022. The new round of curriculum reform requires teachers to change their roles, update their concepts, improve their professional level, and change their methods of educating people, so as to better implement the fundamental task of cultivating morality and cultivating people in teaching practice. In order to better implement the English curriculum reform of compulsory education, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press specially invited Professor Cheng Xiaotang, a core member of the curriculum standard development expert group, to provide a detailed interpretation of the new curriculum standard, to help front-line teachers, teaching and research staff and other basic English education researchers clarify new ideas and master new skills, and ultimately achieve high-quality implementation of the new curriculum standard. As the title reflects, this book strives to answer three questions: What to change in
? How to teach
? How to test
?
1 What to change?
"Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards (2011 Edition)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Old Curriculum Standards") have been implemented for more than ten years, and have made outstanding contributions to English education in the compulsory education stage in my country. However, over the past ten years, my country's social economy has made new developments, people have new expectations for English education, and new progress in English education theory. The old curriculum standards have obviously no longer met the needs of the times. Therefore, after more than three years of questionnaire surveys, theoretical research and feedback revisions, the new curriculum standards were publicly released in April 2022. Whether for basic English education researchers or for front-line English teachers and teaching and research staff, understanding what new changes are there in the new curriculum standards is the first step in implementing the new curriculum standards. Therefore, Professor Cheng used "What to change?" as the previous article of this book, responding to people's concerns.
It is worth noting that this part does not discuss all the changes in the new curriculum standards compared to the old curriculum standards in a comprehensive manner, but focuses on it (this is also a major feature that distinguishes this book from other curriculum standards interpretation books), focusing on the changes in three aspects: curriculum concept, curriculum content and teaching methods. By understanding these three aspects of changes, we will master the important means to understand and implement the new curriculum standards. During the discussion, this part is also quite logical, that is, first clarify the basic concepts, then introduce the new requirements of the new curriculum standards, and finally point out the corresponding changes that front-line teachers need to make in response to these new requirements. These three links are linked together. The previous link is the basis of the latter link, and gradually transitions from theoretical introduction to practical discussion. Finally, guiding suggestions are given for the actual teaching of front-line teachers.
2 How to teach?
's "How to teach?" is a continuation of the previous article "What to change?", focusing on how to cultivate the four core literacies of language ability, cultural awareness, thinking quality and learning ability. In the previous article, readers have learned about the new concepts and main innovations of the new curriculum standards, "but for front-line teachers, the key is still the question of how to teach." Therefore, "how to develop students' core literacy in classroom teaching to help front-line teachers accurately grasp the ways and methods for implementing core literacy" is the ultimate goal of interpreting the new curriculum standards and the main purpose of writing this book. The part of
accounts for more than half of the book, and the writing style is also very distinctive.First, use very concise language to interpret the four aspects of the core literacy that English courses need to be cultivated and the course implementation methods, and then use a large number of typical teaching cases to show how to cultivate students' core literacy in classroom teaching. The total number of these teaching cases is as high as 77, short and concise, full of creativity, and has the characteristics of "three things" (effective, useful and interesting).
For example, when introducing the UK, if the teacher directly tells the students that "England refers to England, Great Britain includes England, Scotland and Wales , and the United Kingdom includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland ", then such teaching is obviously boring and it is difficult for students to remember. If the teacher asks students to practice marking these three names on the map, it will intuitively visualize the abstract knowledge, which will help students understand and master it.
3 How to take the exam?
exam is always the focus of teachers. After the new curriculum standards were released, the most question teachers asked was how to take the future exams. This question is answered in the next article of this book. This part first points out the main problems in current practice and testing, such as some teachers who prefer multiple-choice questions and writing exercises that lack authenticity and openness; then list 12 practice and testing questions design cases to demonstrate how to reflect the concept of the new curriculum standards and facilitate the achievement of curriculum goals; finally, through 12 test questions design cases, discuss how to design exam questions that test students' core literacy.
Looking at the whole book, the writing ideas of this book are: first, introduce the specific "what to change" of the new curriculum standards, conduct theoretical discussions and explorations; then discuss how teachers should "teach" and discuss how to implement the new concept in actual teaching; finally, focus on "how to test", interpret the changes in the examination after the implementation of the new curriculum standards, and guide teachers to design exercises and test questions. The three parts are progressing layer by layer with highlighting key points. At the same time, short, concise and creative cases run throughout the book, greatly enhancing the readability and practicality of the book.
