EdD course includes 72 credits (cps) and usually requires 3 years of full-time and 4 years of part-time study to complete. Admission Requirements

Basic Requirements

1. Must hold a master's degree in an education discipline or in a cognate field related to their chosen professional field. ;

2. Applicants with more than four years of work experience are preferred.

Interviews will only be arranged for those who pass the preliminary selection.


English Language Requirements

Applicants should demonstrate a high standard of spoken and written English. Applicants with admission from non-English system institutions should generally meet one of the following minimum English proficiency requirements:

  • IELTS 6.5 with no subtest below 6.0

  • TOEFL score of 80 (internet-based test)

  • Other Equivalent

* College English Test (CET) is not accepted as equivalent.

tuition fee

The tuition fee for the 2022/23 academic year is HKD 5,000 per credit hour , that is: 72 credits of the EdD course is HKD 360,000. This is temporary and may be adjusted. The University reserves the right to change tuition fees without prior notice. Tuition fees paid are generally not refundable or transferable.

Students who must extend their studies beyond the normal hours (i.e. 3 years full-time, 4 years part-time) will be charged an extension fee.

The application fees for local applicants and non-local applicants are HK$150 and HK$300 respectively. Unless the relevant course is canceled by the university, there is no refund or transfer. Upon successful application submission, applicants will receive application confirmation via email.


Documents to be submitted with the application

Applicants should upload transcripts, certificates, language test results, personal learning statements, research proposals, referee reports and others directly at http://www.eduhk.hk/acadprog/online/ certified documents. Applications will remain incomplete until we receive all necessary supporting materials. Due to system limitations, the maximum size of uploaded files is 25MB and the maximum size of each file is 4MB.


If the applicant is a current final year student on a degree or postgraduate course, please upload a copy of that year's results when available. If the applicant graduated from the Education University of Hong Kong in 1995 or later, there is no need to submit copies of academic transcripts and certificates obtained at the university. However, the applicant must authorize the university to extract and use his/her academic records at the university to process the application.


Applicants who hold degrees awarded by overseas universities may be required to provide an "Academic Evaluation Report" issued by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) to support their application.


Applicants who have obtained a degree from a university in mainland China must provide a bachelor's/ master's degree certificate (Bachelor's/Master's degree certificate) and a bachelor's/master's diploma (Bachelor's/Master's diploma). Requirements for Personal Study Statement/Research Proposal

Application status and admission results

Transfer Credit

Transfer Credit may be awarded to students in recognition of their previous learning experience. Students can submit applications from the date of course registration until the first two weeks of each semester of each academic year. For courses offered during the summer semester (if any), applications should be submitted one week before the start of the semester. Late applications will only be considered if there is sufficient time (usually 4 weeks) to complete the application process before the end of the relevant course.

Dual registration
