design
places two generations of AirPods Professional Edition side by side, they are actually indistinguishable. In addition to the 2nd generation bottom vents and microphones, the headphones and rod designs are exactly the same.
Now, the box contains four earplugs: including a smaller XS size, giving you more options for a perfect fit and seal. For a convenient earplug fit test to double check if you have the best sound quality seal – we found a good seal with multiple earplug sizes. They are also comfortable to wear, thanks to the lightweight design. One thing that the first generation Pros has been criticized is the lack of volume control on the device. Apple has finally improved, through the touch capacitance layer on the rod, where you can slide up or down (on both buds) to change the volume.
You still press like a generation to pause and skip playback and answer calls, while a long press to switch between different noise reduction modes.
The bigger design change is the charging box: it now has a built-in speaker and a lanyard loop. The speakers emit a prompt tone indicating that it is being charged, the battery is low, and helps you find it when you misplace it. The case itself remains the same compact and portable size – it easily slides into the pocket, bag and palm.
There are more ways to charge the charging box: use the Apple Watch charger, Magsafe charger or any Qi-compatible charging pad and the Lightning to USB-C cable provided in the box for wireless charging.
New feature
Pro 2 is impressive. There is a clear difference between the new and old models, and it is reported that Apple blocks twice the background noise with new earbuds. The company said this is thanks to the combination of the powerful new H2 chip with the "optimized" repositioning of the acoustic vents and microphones.
In practice, we found it very effective. The background noise disappeared into the sheer murmur, whether it was the chatter in the office or the roar of the car engine during our daily commutes. It's a comfortable effect and is done well to allow you to enjoy the music without being disturbed by the world around you. The second-generation model has significantly improved noise reduction performance compared to the first-generation AirPods Pro we carried with us during the test.
Apple's advanced H2 chip powers the earbuds, which is responsible for many performance improvements - including ANC and sound - as well as some new features, general smooth usage and higher efficiency.
One of the new features is called "Adaptive Transparency" and is designed to reduce the sudden loud and harsh noise when using the transparent mode to maintain knowledge of the surrounding environment.
call quality is still good. Our voice sounded a little thin, not completely rounded by the video and phone, but it was still very clear and audible. The caller's voice also came cleanly. The battery life of
AirPods Pro 2 has also been greatly improved. The headset can be used for 6 hours on one charge (Open ANC) and a total of 30 hours on the charging case. This is six more hours (24 hours in total) than the previous model.
We did find the new, thickened charging case consumes a little more power during use than before, but it charges faster. If your battery is low, put the headphones in the charging case for five minutes and it will last for an hour.
As always, using AirPods Pro 2 is very simple and intuitive. Apple has a good track record of improving the seamless use of its devices – especially in its own iOS ecosystem – with every generation. It turns out that the same is true here: every time we pair with our iPhone 14 is almost instant. There is also a new dedicated AirPods section in the settings menu of
iPhone, which is accessible faster, where you can customize Siri voice control, personalized spatial audio, adaptive transparency and touch control settings.
Apple's Space Audio features dynamic head tracking to provide immersive 360-degree results when listening to music or watching videos. As before, some tracks perform better than others. Now you can also personalize spatial audio to your profile for more accurate results.
sound effects
Apple has always impressed us with the clarity and tone neutrality of its product audio quality and the wonderful sound style. All of these features are available in the AirPods Pro 2, but now the weight is increased, the details are more, and the dynamics are subtle.
There is a new custom low distortion, high offset audio driver inside each earbud, transducer and high dynamic range amplifier, combined with the advanced audio algorithm of the H2 chip, the sound produced is improved in every aspect than the original Pro.
Compared with the previous generation, we listened to these AirPods Pro experiences are much more interesting. Dynamic Offset has more layers and textures to indulge in a song. They dig deeper, soar higher, without any brightness, and the alto is beautifully conveyed.
We have praised the openness of the AirPods Pro sound before and are once again shocked by the ventilation and open sound of these earbuds, even with improved noise reduction. This is partly thanks to the updated ventilation system, which contributes to better airflow. With ANC turned off, the sound is clearer and there is more room between the elements for the song to breathe. It is also more subtle in terms of details and dynamics.
It is worth noting that while there is no support for high resolution or higher quality codecs, this is still inconsistent with the 24-bit high resolution tracks available in the large directory of Apple Music. AirPods Pro 2 uses basic AAC codec via Bluetooth - it has shown that it is serious about audio Apple will soon provide something for future generations.
Summary
We admit that when AirPods Pro 2 was released, we did not expect such a huge leap in their performance.
noise reduction is very effective, and Apple has many ways to further improve AirPods (ANC mode, higher quality audio codec), but we're happy to see the company's advancements in audio.
