Skipping September this year, the first public version of iPadOS 16 will be iPadOS 16.1 released in October. Apple is currently testing in the beta phase of iOS/iPadOS 16. The former is expected to be released with iPhone 14 in September this year, but the latter Apple will directly skip iPadOS 16.0 and release iPadOS 16.1 in October this year.

On the occasion of the release of iOS/iPadOS 16 Beta 7, foreign technology media TechCrunch mentioned that "Apple is pushing iPadOS 16.1 Beta to registered developer devices." The report seemed pre-written at the time, as Apple's beta documentation refers to iPadOS 16.0 beta 7 instead of 16.1.

However, foreign technology media AppleInsider showed on an iPad device running developer beta: "Your iPad has been upgraded to 16.1." Apple said in a statement: "This year's iPadOS changes are very big. Not only have we designed many features exclusive to iPad, but we have the flexibility to deliver iPadOS on our own schedule. This fall, iPadOS will be released directly after iOS. Free upgrade to 16.1".
