The best MacBook for everyone will be different, but there is a good choice for almost anyone in the 2022 Apple notebook computer lineup. The M1 chip based on ARM launched in 2020 has opened a new era for Apple laptops. Apple’s in-house SoC brings huge performance and battery life improvements across the entire MacBook lineup.
But gaming laptops are not a good choice for Apple laptops, however they are a great choice for almost any other use case, including college laptops or business laptops .
1. MacBook Air (M1, Late 2020): The best MacBook for most people MacBook
The MacBook Air M1 is still the best MacBook for most people. How about the MacBook Air M2? It's a great laptop and we'll cover it on this list, but the reality is that for most users, upgrading won't be necessary, and the starting price for the M1 model is actually okay.
It still outperforms all similarly priced thin and light Windows laptops, and it delivered 14 hours and 41 minutes of battery life in my testing. For any typical computing task, the MacBook Air M1 is up to the challenge and outperforms its successor on a single charge.
So why buy a MacBook Air instead of a Pro? While the Pro has better sustained performance, the MacBook Air is cheaper, and since it doesn't have a fan, it can be quiet. Of course, Apple's cheapest 13.3-inch model is the most portable, measuring just 0.6 inches thick and 2.8 pounds.
As long as you don't mind the older design, the MacBook Air M1 is still one of the best laptops around and should be a strong consideration for anyone considering buying a new MacBook.
2. MacBook Air (M2, 2022): The best low-priced Apple laptop
While most people will be satisfied with the MacBook Air M1, there's no denying the appeal of the new design and, of course, the chip inside the MacBook Air M2.
The notch on the display isn't my favorite design choice, but the rest of the changes are great, as is the addition of MagSafe charging, which frees up those two Thunderbolt 4 ports for other purposes.
You also get a nice performance boost, and it still delivered 14 hours and 6 minutes on our battery life test, easily ahead of its Windows rivals, and that's when performance is taken into account. The fact that it does all this while remaining quiet and cool without a fan is still astounding.
The list of upgrades also includes a brighter display, a four-speaker array, and a new 1080p webcam. This will be particularly welcome in the first place for those who use the Air M2 on the go and may face less than ideal lighting conditions.
3. MacBook Pro (13-inch, M2, 2022): The best Apple laptop with the best battery life
The MacBook Pro M2 may not get the fancy redesign of the new MacBook Air, but internal upgrades give it a better performance than many expected Notably, this puts it well ahead of its Windows 11 competitors at this price point.
Despite cramming so much power into such a slim and stylish chassis, the MacBook Pro M2 lasted an almost unbelievable 18 hours and 20 minutes on our battery test, which simulates real-world testing. That's enough to put it at the top of our list of laptops with the longest battery life.
M2 not only improves speed and endurance. With a once again improved image processing unit, the webcam (sadly still 720p) is better than before, and since it runs on Apple's ARM-based architecture, iPad and iPhone apps are available on the Mac.Yes, you can run all your favorite iOS games and apps on your laptop.
Everything else about the MacBook Pro M2 should feel familiar. It's the same design Apple has used for years, and the Magic Keyboard is a joy to type on (and reliable!). We're disappointed to see TouchBar return, but it does have its fans, and a notch-less screen will definitely be a hit with some buyers.
4. MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021): The best MacBook for professionals
The MacBook Pro 14 combines a little bit old with a lot new, making it the enticing product MacBook fans have been waiting for years — esp. Content creators and consumers. Gamer? You might want to stick with Windows for now.
The laptop's lightweight and sleek design provides ample space for a full HDMI and SDXC card reader. And the M1 Pro chip brings more powerful performance, competing against and easily winning against some of the heavyweights from , Intel, and AMD. Plus, it has over 14 hours of battery life, powerful fast charging, a stunning display, an ultra-comfortable keyboard, and a great sound system. What's wrong with
? According to the convention of and apple , its price is really expensive, even if there is a trade-in. So you have to think about it carefully.
If you're willing to spend more, you can turn on the power of the M1 Max chip, or opt for the larger 16-inch MacBook Pro.
There are no differences in hardware options between the two this year except for display size and battery. If battery life is your primary concern, the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro will last longer than anything in its class and perform nearly as well.
For those who need that last bit of processing power, they now have access to a 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max that's basically unbeatable.
