Samsung Display is negotiating the price of a new 8.5-generation OLED deposition equipment, which is designed to make OLED display panels for devices such as tablets. According to reports, Samsung plans to use this device to mass-produce 8.5th-generation OLED panels by the end of 2024 for Apple’s second-generation OLED iPad.
Last year, Apple began transitioning its iPad and MacBook product lines to mini LED displays, and OLED will be the next step after that. Unlike mini LED displays, OLED panels use self-illuminating pixels and don't require a backlight, which improves contrast and helps extend battery life on future iPad and MacBook models. Apple previously used OLED displays in its latest iPhones and all Apple Watch models.
First-generation OLED iPad models, consisting of the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, are expected to use LG Display and Samsung-supplied displays, using existing 6th-generation OLED production lines. The second-generation OLED iPad will move to Gen 8.5 OLED panels, which are more economical for larger devices than using Gen 6, which is more suitable for smaller devices like smartphones because more OLED panels can be produced on each substrate.
reports that the first OLED iPad models are scheduled to launch in 2024, so the display for the second-generation model is expected to be in mass production in late 2024 and may launch sometime in 2025.
Following the debut of the OLED iPad, Apple is expected to launch a variety of devices with 8.5-generation OLED displays.
