In an obscure new build of the Android 13 developer beta, 9to5Google discovered something interesting: an Android Easter egg that people see every year. This year's hidden function of is built on the colorful splash screen of Android 12 system, this time it is filled with emoji.
It works very much like last year in the current beta (13.3) - go into Settings About Phone Android Version, then quickly tap Android Version three times to start the Easter egg. At this point, an analog clock widget will appear; move the hands to 1 o'clock, and you'll see an array pop up representing Material You's customizable color theme.
Here’s how it differs from last year: long press one of the spots and they will all turn into emojis. Alternatively, you can continue to press and hold to cycle through the screen with different emoji themes, such as sea creatures, cats, and moon phases . But Google isn't the only one playing with emoji wallpapers - one of the iOS 16 lock screens announced at WWDC 2022 is a user-selectable emoji grid.
Android 12’s Easter eggs also have a practical aspect that remains unchanged from last year. Once you find the Easter egg there's a new home screen widget option - called the Android S Easter Egg. Adding it to your home screen will display patches of various system colors based on the wallpaper, just like Material You, so they can be saved or shared.
