The 2023 New Year's Day holiday is coming soon. How will the traffic flow on the expressway be during the long holiday in a few days? What precautions should be taken when traveling by car?
Hunan Expressway Police has prepared the "Hunan Expressway Travel Guide for the 2023 New Year's Day Holiday" for everyone!
Tip 1: Expressway access is not free
During the 3-day New Year's Day holiday in 2023 (December 31, 2022 to January 2, 2023), the expressway will not implement a free access policy.
Tip 2: Traffic flow and peak period forecast
High-speed traffic forecast
Forecast: The province's highway traffic flow will remain at daily levels, with little possibility of surge, and the overall operation of the road network will be relatively stable. Public travel mainly involves short- and medium-distance self-driving within the province, such as visiting relatives and friends, going on vacation, etc., and road network traffic is concentrated on major nodes such as expressways around Changsha and popular scenic spots. Important entrances and exits of cities (prefectures), especially the highways around Changsha City, may experience fluctuating slowdowns during peak traffic hours. It is recommended that everyone choose travel routes rationally and travel at different times and peak hours.
Based on the analysis of road network traffic data trends during the New Year's Day holiday in recent years, it is predicted that the total traffic at the province's highway entrances and exits during the New Year's Day holiday (3 days) in 2023 will be 6.015 million vehicles, with an average daily volume of 2.005 million vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 14.7% from 2022. The predicted peak day will occur on December 31, with peak traffic of approximately 2.05 million vehicles, a 16.3% decrease from 2022.
Peak hour forecast:
On December 30 (the day before the holiday), it is predicted that traffic flow will increase significantly from 16:00 to 21:00, with the flow slightly higher than on weekdays. Traffic flow will spread from major cities to surrounding counties and cities, and the flow of urban import and export toll stations will surge.
December 31 is predicted to be the peak holiday day, and the public has a strong willingness to travel. Starting from 29:00, the province's road network traffic gradually increases to 11:00 to reach the peak on that day. The hourly peak traffic is expected to be 200,000 vehicles. Self-driving tours and family visits are superimposed, with intermittent small peaks. The peak hours are mainly concentrated in the period from 29:00 to 11:00 and from 14:00 to 16:00.
On January 1, 2023 ( New Year's Day ), the traffic dropped slightly compared with the previous day, and medium and short-distance travel vehicles were still relatively concentrated, with a traffic peak in the morning and afternoon.
January 2, the return peak period is likely to be between 14:00 and 16:00, and the traffic volume on the expressway in and out of the city will also increase significantly. The public should understand the road conditions in advance before traveling, arrange their return time reasonably, and travel at wrong times and peak hours.
html On January 3, the holiday was over and the traffic dropped back to normal.Expressway traffic peak hour forecast:

So far, the Hunan expressway mileage has exceeded 7,300 kilometers, and the "seven vertical and seven horizontal" expressway network has been further improved.
(1) S20 Pingdong Expressway Pingyi Section
S20 Pingdong Expressway Pingyi Section consists of Pingwu and Wuyi Expressways. It is the second horizontal line of the "seven vertical and seven horizontal" highway network of Hunan Province. It starts from Shiniuzhai Town, Pingjiang County, Yueyang City (connected to Jiangxi Xiuping Expressway), passes through Pingjiang County, Miluo City, Xiangyin County, Heshan District, and ends at Bijia Mountain, Heshan District, Yiyang City (connected to the Changyi Section of the Changchun North Expressway).
(2) S01 Ningshao Expressway
Ningshao Expressway starts from G5513 Changzhang Expressway Yuxingshan hub in the north and ends at Shaoshan North hub of S50 Changzhi Expressway. It is an important transportation channel for Hunan to implement the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Tanzhou integrated strategic plan, and is also an important red tourism trunk line.
(3) S42 Jiangshan Expressway
Jiangbei to Ganshan Expressway starts from Zhentou Town, Liuyang City, connects to the opened Liuyang to Liling Expressway, ends at Ganshan Town, Changsha County, and connects to the Ganshan hub where the southeast section of Changsha Ring Expressway intersects with the Changsha-Zhuzhou Expressway.

Chenglingji Expressway starts from Yongji Avenue in Xingang District, Chenglingji, to the south to Jinfeng Bridge Interchange of Hangrui Expressway, and ends at Jinfengqiao Road in Yueyang City. The existing Jinfeng Bridge Interconnection will be transformed and connected to Hangrui Expressway .
Tip Five: Analysis of Hot Scenic Areas
It is expected that during the New Year's Day holiday in 2023, some people's willingness to travel will not decrease. Due to the short holiday, most people choose to travel within the province, and short-distance travel has become the main way of travel on New Year's Day. It is expected that the hot spots are mainly concentrated in Mao Zedong’s former residence in Xiangtan City, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Fenghuang Ancient City Scenic Area in Xiangxi Prefecture, etc. The entrances and exits of highways around the scenic area will see heavy traffic flow. It is recommended that the public plan their travel routes and time reasonably and try to travel at different times and peak hours.
