As the popularity of electric vehicles becomes higher and higher, consumers who buy new cars on the market also plan to buy a pure electric new energy vehicle, and the battery life of electric vehicles is an important indicator when buying a car. After all, no one wants the embarrassing situation where the car they buy cannot run out of the city they live in, and there is no electricity. When seeing the standard of range, some cars said that the range is 500 kilometers under CLTC conditions, and some models said that the range is 500 kilometers. Although everyone has a range of 500 kilometers, the test standards based on the two cars are very different. So the question is, which one will be closer to our daily car use scenarios under the two endurance test standards?
First look at the NEDC endurance test. Before the CLTC endurance standard came out, all new energy vehicles in China used this standard to promote the range of their products. NEDC was originally derived from a set of standards formulated by the European market in the last century for the energy consumption of new energy vehicles.
NEDC test condition project includes two operating conditions: urban driving and suburban driving. The urban cycle test is divided into four stages, each stage takes 780 seconds, that is, 13 minutes, and the suburban cycle test is 400 seconds, which is about 20 minutes if you count together. Among them, the maximum circulation speed in the urban area is not higher than 50 kilometers, with an average speed of 19 kilometers; the suburban circulation test speed is not higher than 120 kilometers, with an average speed of 62 kilometers. The test process is done on an indoor simulator. It is worth mentioning that all electrical equipment used during the test are turned off. In terms of vehicle pressure time allocation, the car is in accelerating state 21% of the time, decelerating state 15% of the time, cruising state 40% of the time, and parking 25% of the time.
Therefore, after reading the NEDC standard, I believe everyone will feel that the NEDC test operating conditions are too ideal. The test is not only completed indoors, but also less affected by environmental factors. Most of the time, it is used to drive at an even speed, which is significantly different from the actual vehicle's frequent acceleration and deceleration. Moreover, disabling all electrical appliances is also an operation that is out of reality. I will not discuss electrical appliances such as car machines, audio, ambient lights, etc. Air conditioners, lighting, and instruments are driving necessities and cannot be excluded.
CLTC working conditions are led by China Automobile Research and jointly conducted research and development with experts in the industry. The total time is three years. It was officially released in October 2019 and officially implemented in October 2021.
Compared with NEDC, the CLTC test time and distance are higher, with a total duration of 1800 seconds, which is 30 minutes, and a total mileage of 14.48km. These include three operating conditions: low speed, medium speed and high speed, corresponding to three environments: urban, suburban and high speed. In terms of time proportion, in the 30-minute bench test, the vehicle accelerated 40% of the time, decelerated 35.5% of the time, and 2% of the time is at an average speed, and the remaining more than 20% of the time is at a static idle state. In addition, in terms of driving speed, the maximum speed of CLTC is lower, only 114 kilometers, while the average running speed is 37.18 kilometers.
Comprehensive comparison, the vehicle will travel lower under CLTC conditions, and the lower the speed of electric vehicles, the lighter the motor burden, which is more conducive to improving battery life. And 35.5% of the time is in a slowing condition. You should know that new energy vehicles are now equipped with kinetic energy recovery, and some models cannot even turn off kinetic energy recovery. As long as the pedal is released, they will actively slow down and charge, which is equivalent to increasing the remaining power. And NEDC also has unreasonable aspects, and 40% of the cruise time is simply impossible to achieve.
Overall, the difference between it and our actual car use scenarios is still quite large, so the test results are only used as reference. However, if you have to say it, CLTC will be more in line with the use scenarios of our country. First of all, the speed span is larger, and the average speed driving time will be shorter.
