Tesla (Tesla) has just released its vehicle production and delivery data for the second quarter of 2022.

Here are the key numbers:

  • Total Q2 2022 deliveries: 254,695
  • Total Q2 2022 production: 258,580

Delivery numbers are the closest approximation of sales reported by Tesla, which fell slightly less than analysts’ expected.

Analysts expect 256,520 vehicle deliveries in the quarter, mixed with Covid-19 restrictions, supply chain chaos, shortages of semiconductor chips and other parts, according to Street Account, a unit of FactSet.

Last year, Tesla delivered 201,250 vehicles in the second quarter, the first time it had delivered more than 200,000 vehicles in three months. In the first quarter of 2022, Tesla delivered 310,048 vehicles. Today's deliveries represent a 26.5% year-over-year sales increase, while Elon Musk's Electric Vehicles Enterprise is down 17.9% sequentially.

The company has soft-guided long-term average annual growth to around 50%, based on manufacturing capabilities and other factors.

At Tesla's first-quarter shareholder meeting, the company said: "We plan to increase our manufacturing capabilities as quickly as possible. Over a multi-year period, we expect vehicle deliveries to grow at an average annual rate of 50%."

This In China during the quarter, Tesla had to shut down or only allow parts of its Shanghai factory to operate for several weeks due to coronavirus-related public health orders. (FactSet noted that some analysts' forecasts were excluded from the StreetAccount analysis if the Shanghai factory shutdown was not taken into account.)

Other supply chain chaos, worsened by Russia's war with Ukraine, also affected Tesla in the quarter and the wider automotive industry.

In addition, in addition to the factories in Fremont, California, and Shanghai, Tesla is also working hard to solve the high cost of building and putting into production new factories near Austin, Texas, and Berlin. CEO Elon Musk has publicly lamented that the new factory has cost Tesla billions of dollars but has yet to produce enough cars and batteries to justify the cost.

Tesla's share of the global and domestic electric vehicle markets is expected to decline but remain substantial as startups and legacy automakers offer more new electric vehicles.
