Let us face the sea

Readers and friends, holding this first magazine in 2023, watching the plateau snow peaks holding up a bright moon rising, may be full of emotions. When we look through the photos taken by photographers, we suddenly realize that the past year recorded in the images contains too much truth and absurdity, joy and sorrow. However, what always impresses us is that no matter how muddy life is, people are always struggling for a new life with faith and perseverance. Just as a new year arrives, so does new hope.

In July 2022, NASA's Webb Space Telescope captured the deepest and clearest infrared image of the distant universe so far. The deep black background is dotted with red, yellow, orange, blue, and white light spots. The eight twinkling starlights are like sharp arrows and gods, indifferent, arrogant and alienated, overlooking all living beings countless light years away. Human beings living on small stars are so small, like a grain of sand, but the joys and sorrows in this world of sand and dust are still soul-stirring and unforgettable.

We are very fortunate that with photography , when we look back on the laughter and tears, separation and pain of the past year, we can quickly transcend the barriers of time and space and reach the deepest feelings in our hearts. In the past year, images have truly recorded major events on this planet: Beijing successfully hosted the Winter Olympics at the beginning of the year, making Beijing the first city to host the Summer and Winter Olympics. When the speed skaters passed by in a flash, at the end of the year we saw Messi holding the Hercules Cup and cheering with his teammates at the World Cup in Qatar. Photography records the huge impact that COVID-19 has had on the economy, politics, society, and life as it rages around the world; it records the Russia-Ukraine war that lasted from the beginning of the year to the end of the year and has not yet ended; it records volcanic eruptions, plane crashes, man-made stampedes, demonstrations, and other important events that occurred in countries on all continents. Some of these events are far away from us, and some are very close to us, but the objective recording characteristics of real images make these outstanding images full of explosive power and conflicting tension quickly and directly pierce people's hearts.

When we are sighing and lamenting how much joy and sorrow there is in this world, artificial intelligence, NFT, metaverse and other technological concepts are also intervening in the image with an irresistible force. On one side is the real human world, which requires objective records; on the other side is the virtual image, which requires the power of technology. Between reality and fiction, the images stand at two extremes, either looking at each other and smiling, or turning their backs. The world is changing and wonderful, and images also present rich and diverse styles.

The new year always implies new hope. When changes happen again and again, we expect our future to be better. We expect that in a more relaxed environment, photographers will pick up their cameras, go into nature and into the depths of social life, and shoot works that are powerful, creative, stylish and sharp. These works are just like gardens in spring, colorful and colorful.

Let us face the sea and watch the spring flowers bloom.
