Laowa recently launched a compact “biscuit” type fixed focus lens CF 10mm F4.0 Cookie. Such a compact lens is very suitable for traveling. This lens is equipped with Sony E, Fuji X, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Panasonic L mount, which can meet the needs of most mirrorless cameras on the market.
Foreign media Digital cameraworld tried it out. Please see how they evaluated this new product.

Initial impression: quite portable
If you like outdoor travel and shooting Vlog videos, then you will never find a lighter lens than this Laowa 10mm F4. It is designed specifically for APS-C format sensors, weighs only 130 grams, and is only an astonishing 25mm long, making it so slim that it is almost like a body cover. It has a viewing angle of 109.3 degrees, which is equivalent to a full-frame 16mm focal length. While there are many lenses with a wider angle of view, they are not as portable.
This lens feels very good. Despite its small size, it still comes with a focal length scale and even aperture index markings to help estimate depth of field and hyperfocal distance.
Apparently this is a manual focus lens, it has no electronic contacts and therefore does not pass aperture information back to the camera. You can use it in manual, P and A modes, which require you to set the aperture manually on the lens while the camera calculates the shutter speed to get the correct exposure, but shutter priority mode doesn't work.

Real shooting performance: There are highlights and regrets
In terms of imaging performance, its performance has declined slightly. Its "zero distortion" is indeed outstanding, especially a lens with such a wide viewing angle is quite rare. However, the vignetting of this lens is quite obvious, and while it sounds like it should be easy to correct in software, actually manually adjusting options such as lens radius, attenuation, and strength may be more difficult than you think.
Outdoors, the vignetting at F4 aperture is more obvious
Indoor vignetting is not obvious, and its "zero distortion" is the real feature
The most important thing is that the center sharpness of this lens is very good, but its resolving power Will drop significantly at the edge of the screen.
Of course, Laowa also has a 9mm f/2.8 APS-C lens, which performs better, with good vignetting and edge sharpness, but the disadvantage is that it is more expensive.
It also has a minimum focusing distance of 10 cm, and can even get a certain blur effect
It is good at taking landscape photos, but you need to pay attention to glare

Final conclusion: A new choice for half-frame mirrorless super wide-angle
Laowa’s CF 10mm F4.0 Cookie lens has attracted a lot of attention with its unique personality, but its performance in all aspects is not the best, and its price is also low. Not the cheapest lens in its class. The distortion of the lens is very good, but other imaging performance is a bit disappointing, and the maximum aperture speed of F4 is not very fast.
Of course, if you want to try the affordable ultra-wide angle , then it is definitely worth a try. Especially for users of Nikon Z (Z 30) and Canon RF (R10), this may be the best choice, after all, the original factory does not have products with the same specifications!
