At the beginning of 2019, the Kyoto University General Museum in Japan held a special exhibition, which publicly displayed about 35,000 old photos from the period of China's Anti-Japanese War. At the same time, these photos are all open to the public and can be downloaded for free online.
These photos were taken between 1939 and 1945. They are "North China Transportation Photos" taken by "North China Transportation Co., Ltd." in northern and northwest China.
"North China Communications Co., Ltd." was formally established in Beijing in April 1939 in the name of a Sino-Japanese joint venture special legal person in China. "North China Communications" is directly under the management of the "North China Development Co., Ltd." led by the Military Affairs Section of the Japanese Army Ministry, and is a tool of Japan's economic aggression against China. "North China Transportation" not only builds and manages railways, highways, rivers, canals and harbors, but also establishes Rotary schools, junior schools, Ailu Huimin Institute and other educational institutions in order to cultivate talents to manage or use these infrastructures. In addition to contracting various transportation projects in the areas occupied by the Japanese army, "North China Transportation" also invested a lot of manpower and funds to win over local residents through gentle means, carried out love-road campaigns, propaganda activities, and even participated in espionage activities to strengthen public security.
The "North China Transportation Photos" archive refers to more than 35,000 stock photos used for promotional reports of the North China Transportation Co., Ltd. (1939-1945). There are almost no war scenes in these photos. They mainly focus on transportation infrastructure, human resources development, and industrial development in the North China region. They also cover local customs, folk culture, cultural relics, and buildings. The censored photos are mainly published in public opinion propaganda tools such as the "Hokuchi" pictorial magazine targeting Japanese at home and abroad. After the end of the Anti-Japanese War, "North China Communications Co., Ltd." transferred the photos to the Institute of Humanities, Kyoto University, Japan for safekeeping.
What we share in this issue are old photos of Yuncheng taken by Japanese people. Let us understand and taste together the vicissitudes of history of the ancient land of Hedong and the city of salt transportation during that special period. ▲Yuncheng Yanchi At the beginning of 2019, the Kyoto University General Museum in Japan held a special exhibition, which publicly displayed about 35,000 old photos from the period of China's Anti-Japanese War.
