Spencer Tunick (Spencer Tunick, 1967-) is an American contemporary photography artist. Born in Middleton, New York. Obtained a bachelor's degree in from Emerson College in 1988. In 1994, he started taking large-scale human photography. Initially, black and white photography was used, and color photography has been used since 1998. His unique approach is to direct and shoot extensive body photography, as well as complex performative scenes.
Tunick ’s photography is not just photography, but land art and performance art. He describes his work as "human installation art" and his practice stems from an investigation into the divide between identity and privacy. In a complex contemporary society, his photographs expose the privacy and uniqueness of individuals while objectifying a multitude of individuals into the human landscape. On May 6, 2007, Mexico 20,000 nude photography event was the largest in his career so far.
In 2021, Tunick arranged about 200 nude models on the stony brown hills of the Dead Sea, overlooking the turquoise water. One of the models who participated in the shoot was 26-year-old doctoral student Kleiman, who revealed that he participated in the shoot to raise awareness of the environmental crisis, saying, “Once you take off your clothes, it feels really natural and you feel a little bit Not wanting to put our clothes back on, I think we just struggled a little bit on the rocks”.
The Israel Tourism Board is the financial sponsor of Tunik's photo shoot, and hopes the shoot will attract more visitors and help raise funds for a new museum about the Dead Sea.
Tunick regards his photography activities as a kind of performance art. He believes that taking nude photos of himself should not cause controversy. However, when he uses the city as a shooting background, it is easy to cause controversy. When explaining why he always chooses the city as the background, Tunick said that he wanted to highlight the contrast between the human body itself and the living environment.
