Did you know there's a "pig" living in the Yangtze River? It's not Peppa Pig. It’s the "giant panda of the water", famous for its signature smile—the Yangtze finless porpoise.

The Yangtze finless porpoise is a rare species endemic to China, and the only remaining mammal living in the Yangtze River. These lively animals love to roll, leap, splash, and make sharp turns. Before storms, they surface more often and move into the wind, which is called "greeting the wind."
As for the nickname "river pig", it comes from ancient observers. Look at their bodies rising and falling in the water, don't they resemble chubby little pigs?

With their natural "smiles," finless porpoises are known as "smiling angels." But that smile once faded, as pollution and environmental damage caused their population to decline.

Here in Yichang, the battle to guard this "smile" has never stopped. The city enforced the 10-year fishing ban on the Yangtze, decommissioned 1,878 fishing boats, and helped 3,678 former fishers transition to new jobs.
Yichang also shut down, upgraded, relocated, or transformed 134 riverside chemical plants, cleaned up 1,973 sewage outlets in the Yangtze and Qing River basins.

Here, protecting the Yangtze and the finless porpoise is a whole-of-society undertaking.
Former fishers now serve on "porpoise patrol teams," covering over 400,000 kilometers in eight years.
Citizen volunteers act as "spotters," documenting porpoise activity through their lenses and helping report emergencies.
Environmental groups continue outreach programs, bringing conservation into everyday life.

Thanks to these sustained efforts, the local porpoise population in the Yichang section has grown from just two or three individuals before the ban to over twenty. They are frequently sighted near Gezhouba and Yanzhiba waters. These moments have become one of the softest and most heartwarming signs of the Yangtze's recovery.

In early 2026,
launch of the Yangtze Finless Porpoise Rescue Action Plan (2026–2035),
is charting a long-term future
for this "smiling curve."
