「退燒」比較專業的一個詞是動詞defervesce /ˌdefə'ves/，它的意思就是退熱，也可用它的形容詞defervescing表示「退熱的」。比如，醫生在交流病情時的會說：
A: How's the patient?A: 病人情況如何?B: He's defervescing. Lytes, chest x ray, urinalysis were all normal.B: 他退燒了。電解質、胸部X光片、尿檢結果都正常。
