Generally, giant pandas choose a safe and comfortable place near a food source to sleep. Newborn giant panda cubs often sleep protected in their mothers’ forelimbs. When the mother panda forages for food, she places her cub in a cave or hollow tree. After the cub learns how to climb trees, it will perch and sleep in tree branches while it waits for its mother’s return. Adult giant pandas typically sleep where they eat. Captive giant pandas prefer to rest perched high up on the wooden platforms and nests in their outdoor and indoor enclosures.
