台风也叫热带气旋 Tropical Cyclone，是发生在热带海洋上的一种具有暖心结构的逆时针强烈旋转的涡旋。

等级(由低到高)：缩写和全称

TC 热带气旋 tropical cyclone

TD 热带低压 tropical depression

TS 热带风暴 tropical storm

STS 强热带风暴 severe tropical storm

TY 台风 typhoon

STY 强台风 severe typhoon

Super TY 超强台风 super typhoon

不同海区热带气旋的不同名称

发生在西北太平洋和南海海域的称之为台风 typhoon

发生在北大西洋、加勒比海、墨西哥湾、东北太平洋东部和东经160度以东的南太平洋等海域的称之为飓风 hurricane

发生在北印度洋、孟加拉湾、阿拉伯海等海域的称之为气旋风暴 cyclonic storm

发生在东经160度以西的南太平洋和东经90度以东的东南印度洋等海域的则称之为强热带气旋 severe tropical cyclone

发生在西南印度洋的则称之为热带气旋 tropical cyclone

台风眼

台风眼的英文是 eye of the typhoon / storm，也可以说typhoon eye。台风眼是环流中气压最低的地方，其形状大多为圆形、椭圆形、卵形、开口眼和多边形等五种，形状愈完整、愈清晰，代表强度愈强。台风的位置以台风眼为准，在这个区域里通常无风无雨，但在台风眼边缘却是风速最强的地方。
