1749年,14岁的少年沃特森在古巴哈瓦那港口游泳时，遭到鲨鱼的袭击，后经众人齐心协力的抢救，竟神奇地将他从死亡边缘拉了回来，他后来成为英国一个很成功的商人和政治家。画面上九个水手正拼命前去救助沃特森，但左下角殷红的海水表明他已失去了右脚。
人物的表情、动作所产生的焦虑不安以及抢救生命时那种惊心动魄的紧张，被科普利描绘得淋漓尽致。
1778年，作品在英国皇家艺术学院展出时，轰动画界，其宏伟的结构绐人留下了极深的印象。
