詳解慈禧御用翻譯德齡公主：我們的英文，其實不如一個清朝人

前陣子，一個1930年拍的視頻在網上火了。

慈禧的御用翻譯，晚清德齡公主的一則全英文演講。該視頻拍攝於1930年，當時德齡公主44歲。

在演講中她表示，當今社會正經歷着前所未有的變革。她希望國家與國家之間相互理解，相互尊重，只有這樣，才能實現全世界的和平。

The world today is passing through the most tremendous periods of real adjustment as mankind has seen.

Since I have been in this country first time through my writing and lecturing, I have endeavored to create a better understanding between China and the United States by presenting their beautiful artistic and cultural side of Chinese life.

因為這是我首次以寫作和演講的方式來到這個國家，我已經努力的向你們介紹中國具有藝術性和文化方面的生活，並希望以此來增進中美之間的關係。

I am grieved that this side of Chinese life is very little known here.

看完這個視頻，是不是很好奇這位「德齡公主」到底是什麼來頭呢——

德齡公主(Yü Derling, Princess Derling)，本名裕德齡，1885年6月8日生於湖北武漢。

「德齡公主」是滿族正白旗漢軍旗人，其父裕庚是清朝外交官，曾官至清廷總理衙門大臣，先後出使日本、法國，裕德齡隨父先後在日本和法國生活六年。

1903年，處於內憂外患的清廷急需通曉外語的國際人才，於是裕庚一家被召回京城，裕庚的夫人路易莎以及女兒德齡和容齡入宮成為慈禧的翻譯。

在慈禧身旁侍奉兩年後，德齡因父親病重，於1905年離宮前往上海照顧父親。後來，她在1907年與美國人撒迪厄斯·懷特結婚。

1911年，她以「德齡公主」為筆名，出版了《清宮二年記》(Two Years in the Forbidden City)。

在書中，德齡回憶了自己兩年的宮中生活，向世人展示了不為人知的清廷深閨以及慈禧太后的真實性格，展現了即將被革命所推翻的末代皇朝。

In this book, Cixi is not the monster of depravity depicted in the popular press, but an aging woman who loved beautiful things, had many regrets about the past and the way she had dealt with the many crises of her long reign, and apparently trusted Der Ling enough to share many memories and opinions with her.

書中，慈禧並不是像大眾媒體報道的那樣，是一個腐壞墮落的惡魔，而是一個上了年紀的老太太，也會喜歡漂亮的事物，對往事，對自己經歷過的那些國之大難抱有遺憾。很顯然，慈禧非常信任德齡，跟她分享了很多自己的回憶和感想。

Two Years provides unique insights into life at the Manchu court and the character of the Empress Dowager Empress. Der Ling continued to write and published seven more books.

這本書為後人研究滿族宮廷和慈禧太后提供了珍貴的材料。隨後，她又先後出版了7本著作。

Princess Der Ling died in Berkeley, California, as a result of being struck by a car while crossing an intersection. She had recently taught Chinese at University of California, Berkeley.

1944年，德齡公主因一場交通意外，不幸逝世於美國加州伯克利。逝世前，她任教於美國加州大學伯克利分校，教授中文。

在20世紀二三十年代，德齡所著《清宮二年記》、《清末政局回憶錄》、《御苑蘭馨記》等，也被翻譯成中文，被國人廣泛閱讀。

德齡的故去並沒有減少外國讀者對她作品的喜愛：時至今日，歪果仁讀者們依然十分喜歡這本百年前的回憶錄

作為慈禧時期歷史的見證人，德齡公主用第一人稱講述的清朝故事，至今都影響着對清朝的歷史研究，而她的優秀，也影響了現在的我們。
