In autumn father took his son to a small tree. He measured① his son and knocked in a nail② as a mark③. He hoped that the boy could grow taller next year. In winter it snowed very hard, however, the nail was still in the trunk④ of the tree all the time. Spring came and the small tree grew stronger. Father brought his son to the tree again. He was eager⑤ to see how much the boy had grown since last year. To his surprise⑥, he found that his son was shorter than the mark . He wondered, 「What happened to my son?」
